How to go from iTunes 4 to 6?

I have a iBook 500 with a second gen iPod and do not want to lose tunes I have. Will the download retain music and work on my iPod? 10.2.8 seems to be sufficient.

If you make a backup of your tunes before you try it, you can give yourself better peace of mind.

I think it would work without losing your tunes. The only way you can know is to try it.

Edit:

Your iTunes library of music is stored in Your Home Directory-->Music-->iTunes.
I recommend making a backup copy of that folder.

Anyone who doesn't back up their iTunes libraries (in particular their purchased music) is an idiot. There, I said it.

I mean, come on -- iTunes ALLOWS and ENCOURAGES customers to make Audio CDs of their purchases as [one form of] backup, and you're free to make data CDs/DVDs or copy them onto external HDs as well. There's no excuse for losing digital music, digital photos and other documents that are difficult or impossible to replace, given the prices of today's backup media.

I just upgraded from 4.7.1 to 6.0 and everything was fine. That said, please make a backup of all your song files. No one can guarantee that there won't be a problem.

I am backed up. Just wondering if 6 will replace 4 automatically and pick up existing tunes.

Sarcastic answer:

No, each new version (or even minor update) of iTunes destroys all song files and forces them to be repurchased from the iTMS by charging your card without your knowledge.

Real answer:

Yes. Duh.

Sarcasm not appreciated here. At least by me. I've learned too much from reading others' posts and helpful replies, thank you.

Have a nice day.

There was one small problem with one recent flavor of iTunes and some version of Tiger that caused some folks to loose their library, but it was recoverable. I don't remember those details.

And I *thought* some flavor of Panther was needed for the earliest version of iT6, along with some upgrade of QT.

I admit I haven't followed the various system requirements too closely, though.

I've upgraded iT with no problems-- 6.0.1 and 10.4.4.

6.0.2 is available but I haven't bothered to check out the What's New yet.
