The popcorn coating in my garage ceiling it coming off (35 yr old house) cracking at drywall seams, coming off. I don’t know who to contact to repair. A painter? What classification does a pop corn ceiling fall under ?

Drywall guys, they deal with repairs/installs.

Based upon the age you state, it should be free of asbestos. Popcorn ceilings may have contained asbestos up to about 1978.

.....if you can, please break the glass ceiling........

Most will suggest putting new drywall over it.

This is what my dad did in his house. But he most likely DID have asbestos in his ceilings.

I would talk to a drywall guy and ask if it would be easier/cheaper to put 1/4" drywall over what's there, as mentioned above, or to scrape off the texture and repair the seams. After that, you would still need to paint.

If it is minor, a painter could do small repairs and repaint.

It would probably be worthwhile to check for water damage or otherwise figure out why its peeling. Could be a bigger problem.

what Bernie & rgG said. Scraping, patching, & taping could cost more in
labor vs recover with 1/4" board. Of course either method would require
priming and painting if needed in your 'garage'.

btw, mattkime's advice is good. Check for roof leaks beforehand.

We bought a rental condo about 15 years ago, and the first thing we did was have all the popcorn ceiling removed. Hate, hate, hate the stuff. IIRC, it cost about $4k for an 1,800 sq ft. condo at the time. It was a bit messy, as they have to spray it and then scrape it. The results were good.

.....so popcorn ceiling......it isn't....a.....peeling......???

FWIW a “cheap fix” involves adding screws and mud, rolling primer on, and blowing more “popcorn” on the ceiling. Then prime and paint over it.

Textured ceilings are a major pain in the tush when it comes to patching. It’s impossible to get the pattern to match.
