I could believe they couldn't see it from the cab once it was attached to the bumper....but it had to get there first and that they should have been able to see.

^ This. Heck, look at the sightline from the cab in the side-on still photo... no part of the Mini would've been visible from inside the truck even if the car wasn't sideways. Add to that how much power an empty dump truck has on tap and I guarantee the driver never felt any drag at all from pushing a Mini sideways.

Maybe no noticeable drag but I guarantee the driver felt the impact. The problem is that an inexperienced driver wouldn’t know that the impact needed to be investigated. Thinking, “Geez, what was that?” is not investigating.

Having said that, I confess to trying to change into the same lane (Dan Ryan Expressway) as a four-wheeler and thought the impact was an imperfection between the lanes (uneven roadway). The car followed me to the toll booth on the Chicago Skyway where he showed me the ding in his left front door and I had fresh scratches on the right steering axle bearing cap which matched the damage on his car.

There are large blind areas that more and more truckers are trying to avoid having by installing additional spot mirrors (fender mirrors and others). But even those don’t help at night, especially on lighted stretches of highway because going from dark to light and back again for miles means that soon your eyes and mirrors don’t quite see that dark car and it’s headlights next to you in a spot mirror. Give me Lidar or radar. They work great on my car, giving me a visual indicator (light flashing in a side mirror) as well as vibrating the drivers’ side seat lower cushion bolster on the left or the right, depending on the location of the car.

I seriously doubt the driver felt the impact because large trucks like that ride horribly due to their stiff spring rates even when equipped with air-ride suspension, especially dump trucks and double especially when they're not loaded. Just riding down what would be a relatively smooth road in a car feels like constant series of bumps and jolts in a dump truck, so one more wouldn't have stood out. The terrible ride quality of big trucks is why almost all of them have a separate and much softer suspension system just for the driver's seat to soak up all the jostling about and reduce driver fatigue.

No, the driver felt the impact but didn’t realize what it was and chose to ignore it as nothing after checking mirrors and gauges.

There's tons of videos of drivers of small cars cutting trucks off so closely, the truck driver doesn't see them. Since her car was sideways, it appears that she really cut the truck off which spun her car. Between the weight of his truck, load and the truck's momentum he may not have felt much.

Running over something might be mistaken for a bump in the road or otherwise mitigated by suspension.

But striking something in a forward motion definitely should have got the truck driver's attention, and sparked a question.

He just chose to ignore it.

Funny story (bec no one was injured). When I drove a truck, another driver told me of squishing a subcompact car between his bumper and the car in front, oblivious to it being there at a stop light. He kept pushing in first gear, and in a dump, the first gear is superrrrr low. Finally, the guy got out, rather pissed.

In that era, think original Honda Civic or something similarly small.

First off, I drive a Mini, a 2-door hatch; his name is Oliver (yes, I named the car: deal with it).

The truck driver had to have hit her in her driver's back quarter panel, spinning the car into the path of the truck. She was very lucky this didn't end badly for her. He SHOULD have been able to see her, as this apparently was a ramp leading to another highway and it also appears that he was changing lanes into the off/on ramp and hitting her. With such a long nose of the truck he wouldn't have seen her after the "tap." The lightest curb weight of a manual version for the Mini is 2,700+ pounds; he would have noticed having to suddenly push such a thing. If you are going to tell me the truck driver wouldn't have noticed the smell of burning tires, then I call "shenanigans" as anyone paying attention to what is going on around him would have done so.

I can tell you as Oliver's driver, once you get close enough to ANYTHING it seems like you vanish and can no longer be seen, irrespective of blind spots (either your's or other's). Extreme caution is required these days.

That's a rather large blind spot; I've nearly been that driver (edit: of the car) a time or two.

Not bull, my father did the same thing in a crane. Someone came up an onramp and tried to cut in front of him and he wound up pushing/dragging the car for a quite a distance without any knowledge they were there.

TL;DR: I bumped a car once. I definitely felt it.

I was going to enter a one p-way 55 MPH road from another one-way. I had a yield sign, the other road had no traffic control. There was a mid-‘60’s Olds 88 in front of me (this was in the mid ‘70’s). I was watching the Olds, waiting for it to jump out into the not-too-heavy traffic. I saw the driver make his move as well as the space he was going for. My space was just a few seconds later. I hadn’t moved because I needed all the run-up room I could use. I made my move right into the back of the Olds whose driver had decided not to complete his move. I was driving an empty belly dump weighing about 26,000 lbs. We both stopped, he got out of his car, looked at the damage, then got back in his car and beat it out of there. I suspect he had no insurance. I checked the front of the truck when I got to the gravel pit and there was no damage, not even a scuff mark, so I must have hit him pretty squarely.

Of course the Olds was a two ton car, not a one ton Mini. But there is no way the Canadian driver didn’t feel the impact.
