Screen saver bug: M1, Big Sur, or both?

I am using this M1 MBA to surf this lovely forum and all of a sudden the screen saver kicks in. I cannot get rid of it with a keystroke or using the trackpad.

I found out that I can close the lid and open it again and the screen saver is gone the machine works fine. No need to reset, reboot, nothing. Sometimes it happens 1-2x per day, sometimes it happens every 2-3 days. sometimes it happens when both of us are logged in, other times when only one of us is logged in.

This does not happen an other Intel machines that have older OS X or macOS versions. It only happens on this machine, so I suspect it is an M1 or Big Sur.

I did install Big Sur on my MIL intel MBA and she did not complain about this yet, so maybe it is an M1 after all.

Space,

I had that happen on two different iMacs under Mojave. Only solution was to disable the screen saver entirely.

Is it a downloaded or old screensaver? If so, dump it.

Most of the M1 display problems result in the display going black, not waking from sleep, or the Mac panics with an external display connected, so I'm inclined to go with the "same old bug in the OS that Apple never bothered to fix since it started popping up in Yosemite."

Similar thing on my 2012 mini.

When I start using my 2012 mini after it sleeps for awhile, I have to fight off the lock screen several times, until it 'warms up'.

I'll wake it and type in the password, and all is well.

Then a minute or so later, the screen goes black.

If I'm watching a video via VLC or Safari, I can still hear the audio, playback isn't affected (other than not seeing it).

Tapping a key or mouse brings up the lock screen.

If I don't tap and instead wait, the lock screen will come up on it's own.

Enter the password, the screen unlocks, and it's business as usual, until a few seconds or a minute or so later, rinse, repeat.

After a few times it stops, until the mini takes a good nap.

It doesn't happen when using the mini via screen sharing from by MacBook.

I disabled Hot Corners, and I can't think of anything that would start this cycle.

This is the default that came with the M1 machine. I just checked and it was set to 20 min (I am not sure if I set it to 20 min or if this was the default setting). I just changed it to "Never". Let's see what happens.

Use Disk Utility First Aid then reboot normally. I have a M1 mini running BS that has been having all kinds of quirks I have not seen before. Most of them have been solved using DU First Aid and then rebooting. I'm still having problems with Wake from Sleep, as are others. It will get sorted sooner or later. Apple is aware.

This is a Big Sur bug that I hit on my M1 Air on early versions of Big Sur. It has been fixed in a more recent release. Are you on the current Big Sur version?
