Siri, turn off the TV

I was having dinner and I was too lazy to move and press the remote. I asked Siri to turn off the Apple TV and she did, so the Samsung TV also turn off. Nice.

Now I asked Siri to turn ON the Apple TV, that should also turn on the Samsung TV but it does not. Why?

for the record, I do have Apple TV set up to control the Samsung TV via the HDMI cable and it works wonderfully; the Samsung goes ON and OFF at the same time as Apple TV, all by pressing the buttons on the little Apple TV. I don't even know where the Samsung remote it.

So back to my question: Why does Siri fail to turn ON the Apple TV? she can turn it off, obviously but not ON? why?

Does the TV need to be on to receive controls over HDMI? Seems like that’s something that should just work since TVs don’t really turn off anymore anyway. Maybe some setting to receive signals when powered off needs to be checked somewhere on the TV?

so the TV can receive signals via the HDMI, since the Apple TV can control it if I use the remote.

Sut Siri fails to wake up the Samsung TV.

I think I will turn on the Samsung manually and then ask Siri to wake up the Apple TV, I want to see if at least that part works.

Siri doesn't work consistently.

(Many threads on the subject, including one quite recently.)

I use Alexa to control the TV via Logitech Harmony. (The remote is nearly useless, but the voice-controls are good.)

I can’t turn my Sony tv off using Alexa, but Alexa won’t turn it back on.

Samsung says unplug the hdmi and run the setup again. I doubt that would fix it, though, since other functions work fine. I’d troubleshoot with my Samsung and Apple TV, but I don’t think my cable is up to it. I think it probably uses the same connectivity as ARC. My cable is too old to support it and it’s run through the wall.

OK I have an update

if I turn ON the TV with the Samsung remote, then I can ask Siri to turn the Apple TV ON and OFF and it works, but it will not turn off or on the Samsung.

The only way this works if is AppleTv was playing something and then I ask Siri to turn the Apple TV OFF while playing something, that will also turn off the Samsung TV.

I will do more testing tomorrow.

Control over HDMI isn’t the greatest, still has hiccups. I programmed my Apple TV remote to turn off/on the TV, but like you it doesn’t turn it on via Siri. The HDMI speaker turns on and off with the TV, being controlled over HDMI, but no love for the TV.

We have a logitech remote and hub ... Looks like this model but I've had it for 3-4 years (I think) so not sure which model we have.

This is linked with my Amazon Echo and I'm assuming Apple Smart Hub would do the same if you linked everything that way. Not sure... But I tell "Alexa" to turn on and off the TV and it works.

I'm on the fence on which way to go. We have Amazon Alexa, Smart Life (Controls smart switches and smart plugs), Smart Things (Smoke Detectors) and now I have a Phillips Hue to control our Smart LED strips (Hue Compatible) in our kitchen. My buddy is telling me to setup a raspberry pi with Home Assistant and "all" my smart devices can be controlled in one location.

We had a voice activated remote control when I was a kid. My mother would yell, "Get in here and change the channel!"
