I talked to a friend who has one and is really stoked.

It sounds interesting and the Oculus has improved since it first was a thing.

The only hurdle is that it apparently needs a FaceBook account.

So I'm wondering about the pros and cons of the Quest.

Not to hijack the threat, I am struggling to help a relative with chronic pain after an auto accident three years ago and have seen very encouraging research about the use of Oculus Quest in burn wards where they have to do daily, excruciating debreing the wounds. If anyone has knowledge or experience of this use of the Oculus Quest I would really appreciate it.

Facebook has been known to suddenly stop having apps be available, even apps you have paid for. Just poof gone and you’re out the money. Might wanna keep that in mind.

Not just an account - you have to have the app on your phone!

I just like the way the woman says "Oculus" in the commercial.

My son's roommate bypassed the Oculus and went with the Valve Index. They're extremely happy with it, despite some lost sleep and a small adjustment period re/motion sickness.

Ok, being associated to FB and well as anchored to it with an app on the 'Phone is a non-starter.

I'd really like to try a similar device.

Is there one that doesn't require some kind of online account and content?

Having the option to buy content that lives on the device outside of an account along with streaming online would be preferable.

Tied to a cloud and/or subscription puts me off.

It's a lot of money to invest and need to pay, for as long as you want to use it.

A phone is something of a subscription device, but I can still play/watch content without any cell or data plan.

We got a couple for our kids for Christmas and they really are awesome! This shows how to use an Oculus without FB: [www.youtube.com] - but I haven't tried it, so I can't speak on it.

The games actually download to the Oculus, so I'm not sure that FB would be able to wipe them from the Oculus if they were discontinued (though nothing surprises me anymore with FB!). My kids don't use their FB account, other then when they set up their Oculus the first time. They also rarely use the Oculus app on their phone, but I believe there are a few settings in the phone app that aren't available in the Oculus.

We created a free SideQuest account [sidequestvr.com] and have downloaded some of their free games. In order to do so you have to create a (free) Oculus developer account and turn on some settings in the Oculus: [developer.oculus.com]

Here's a useful link for using SideQuest on the Oculus: [uploadvr.com]

In a nutshell, [after creating the dev account and turning on the needed settings] download the SideQuest App to your computer, hook the Oculus up to your computer (if your computer doesn't have a USB-C port, you can get a USB-C to USB-A adapter for the cable the comes with your Oculus). Then download the games to your Oculus and you can then play them wirelessly - just like any game you bought through the Oculus store. There are a few App Lab games that show up in the Oculus games list. The others can be found under 'unknown sources' in the apps list (which is different from the games shown in the games list when you click the 'waffle' icon).

I highly recommend Wander, which is a really amazing app! It's based on Google Maps and you can travel almost anywhere. IMO, an Oculus would be great for someone who is bed-bound. It would create a whole new world for them!

This is also a great workout device. Thrill of the Fight is (again IMO), the best boxing game on the Oculus. I'm a sweaty mess after playing it! We ended up ordering these [www.amazon.com] to cover the spongy face cushion that comes with the Oculus.

As for motion sickness, I've noticed that in some of the cartoony games. Pretty much, if it's a game you're physically moving around in (as opposed to moving with the joystick), motion sickness is mainly non-existent. The Jurassic World game was one that made me sick. I thought it was going to be more realistic, but ended up being visually like a cartoony comic book. Fortunately, Oculus has a great return policy: if you have the game less than 2 weeks and have played it less than 2 hours you can return it. It took about 5 days to get our refund on JW.

The general suggested fix for Oculus motion sickness is to put a small rug on the floor in your boundary (even if you're already standing on carpet), and also have a fan blowing on you. There are YouTube vids on this and, though I haven't tried this myself, seems to be the general fix for everyone.

Yes. I have one. And a Facebook Acct. The quests 2 is definitely worth getting and at moment is the cutting edge. It has several advantages over the others. The biggest is that is a standalone which means you don’t need any cables. The battery life is decent means a couple of hours of heavy use. Standalone means no need to have a computer going. And not even WiFi for a lot of the games.
One big feature of the quest is unofficial official game apps which occulus allows to be loaded. Means that there a lot of really unusual stuff.
The Facebook Acct part isn’t that big a thing if your friend doesn’t already an account. You can setup an account and then change all the privacy settings to maximum.

Is the standard soft strap adequate, or is it worth getting the elite strap for $50?
