Mojave users, can you reproduce this Safari glitch?

After reading more headlines accusing Nikola Motors of fraud, I was reminded of Mark "Shifty" Schifter, the crook who once ran an online home theater gear site at AV123.com.

I tried to type "AV123" into my browser's search bar, but every single time, Safari 14.0.3 (Mojave) crashes as soon as I type "AV12" into the address bar. Can anyone else replicate this? Happens as soon as I hit the "2" key.

Seems to be certain combinations involving "2" such as:

av12 or av2

I tried it in Safari 12.1.2 on Mojave 10.14.6 and it crashed. The Problem Report for Safari shows (among a billion other things):

Exception Type: EXC_BAD_INSTRUCTION (SIGILL)

Termination Signal: Illegal Instructions: 4

Termination Reason: Namespace SIGNAL, Code 0x4

Maybe Doc knows...

I tried it on my Mojave Mac.

Got Google search results with top hit "AV12 wheels for sale."

I wonder whether there's an add-on that's crashing you.

...

Edit: Realized you wanted to type "av123" ... Went back and tried that. Got Google search results with top hit "AV123 Mark Schifter indicted by Grand Jury on Five Counts."

OK. This is weird. When I type in "AV12" and then type a "3" Safari immediately crashes every time. If I type in anything else after "AV12" Safari doesn't crash.

No crash here w/ Safari 14.0.3 (14610.4.3.1.7) on 10.14.6 (18G103),
However, my default search engine is DDG not google.

instantly crashes me as soon as I type av12 - I tried to type av123 really fast and the test showed up, but still crashed in the next instant.

Switching to duckduckgo as the default search changed things... I could type av12, but as soon as I added the 3, it was gone.

v14.02
10.14.6

all was fine on my laptop running 10.15.7

Thanks everyone. Not something I'm necessarily trying to solve. I am just curious. Changing the default search engine didn't help, but I found a few things that made a difference.

First, if I PASTE "AV123" into the search field, it bypasses the on-the-fly search suggestions for "A-V-1-2" and manages to avoid the crash that occurs after manually typing the 2.

Next, once I click one of the resulting links, Safari proposes the visited site as opposed to crunching each manual keystroke the next time I type A-V-1-2 —again avoiding a crash. But if you clear your history, it will start all over again.

Lastly, deselecting the checkbox to "Include Safari Suggestions" eliminates the problem entirely. Not something I'm going to do for such an isolated instance, but it does narrow it down to where the issue is.

Crash here on version 13.1.2 and High Sierra. Few plugins, and google as the default search.

With or without any extensions?

I've just upgrade to Mojave on another machine, so I want to get 'round to trying this.

DDG is my default as well.
