Random thought as Facebook presented me with a advertisement for a GPS trackable dog collar with a charging base. With my luck every time the dog got out it would be with a dead battery. I seem to remember back when wearables were starting to be a thing that everyone was talking about watches charging themselves from the motion of your arm swinging. The technology must not have panned out?

Movement and solar powered watches are very much a thing.

Other applications, I have no idea.

But unless you attach a movement powered ankle bracelet to a dog's hind leg, it's pretty much a non-starter for a GPS tracker/xmtr.

The Citizen Eco-Drive solar powered quartz watches my wife gave me 10 years ago are still running. The range is still being made.

It worked...somewhat. I had a Seiko Kinetic watch that I liked quite a bit. It still has a battery in it. Replacing the battery required sending the watch to Seiko...it wasn't worth the effort.

I have a Pulsar Solar that I have worn for probably 20+ years. It has never been wound nor has the internal battery been replaced. Works like a charm. (Exact date of acquisition estimated.)

Well - I've got two Casio AL190W-1AV watches I bought on ebay 8 years ago ($20 for the pair, shipped) - no battery at all; the solar panel charges up a capacitor, which will power the watch for a few weeks after being exposed to light for a half-hour or so.

Last week, I actually found the spare one I had sitting in a closet since bought. The display was out completely, but within 15 seconds or so of being exposed to light it came back to life.
