Huh. Bloomberg says the main “chip” shortage plaguing the world is...

...display drivers. And glass.

The article says these mundane chips are usually produced using “mature” processes, several generations behind the cutting edge 4 to 5nm ones, and those old lines (which they don’t appear to be making more of) are running full time.

The specific requirements for display glass are beyond me, but apparently there’s a shortage of that too, which with the driver chip shortage is..umm...driving up display prices and causing display unavailability.

Who knew? Not me. For want of a nail...

I guess it makes sense. Everyone wants screens (and needs display glass), and those need display drivers.

I can tell ya first hand - while these may be a big part of the semi shortage.... it's very broad and the shortages we are seeing are on ALL components that are wafer derived, which are all semi/IC components including the the display silicons. specific processors, controller ICs, you name it - you name it. Each week a new IC maker pushes orders back and.or raises price.

Across it all - got demand, capacity, and raw supply factors all smashing together.

I'd strongly disagree with the 'main shortage' bit and say the area they covered is just another one subject to major shortage right now.

I've been watching the prices on Radeon (AMD) graphic cards go thru
the roof, if you can find the card you want.
(allegedly due to shortage & bit miner demand.)
July 2nd I bought a new MSI Radeon RX 570 8GB for $120 from Newegg.
7/02/20 Deal Post

Similar card is now $750. [www.newegg.com]

And from what I've read, Nvidia is in the same boat.

Not sure that's due to a chip shortage, but from bitcoin mining...

I checked the prices for video cards and they are truly insane. Nvidia GTX750 4 GB selling for $180. This is a card that was released in February 2014. I can’t believe that you can still buy these new. I believe this card was selling for less than $150 in 2015.

Lets pool the money we've saved buying cheap stuff and open a chip fab!
