Who has the oldest Mac in daily use?
Posted by: karsen

I had a thread yesterday asking what your first Mac was and what other Macs you've owned. There was some interesting lists. in particular I was amazed by the number of Lisas people here owned.

So the next question is who here is using the oldest Mac for personal daily use? Not sitting in the corner of a print shop running a Panther RIP or something, but that's interesting to know too. Inquiring minds want to know who's using the oldest Mac in the MacResource Forum today!

Yes...I'm working on tossing it onto an Xserve when I have time...lol.

This is embarrassing, to me anyways...and I did not originally set this up years ago...but our main website, which generates much traffic, is still being ran on an older, biege G3 desktop via WebStar 3.02 in OS 9.0.4.

The processor is a 266Mhz...was 96MB of RAM for the longest (I took it offline and upgraded it to 384MB just couple days ago). It has the stock 4GB HD with around a 1GB left, at the moment (been as low as a couple hundred MB). : )

The reason it has never been ported over, in it's entirety, is because it has been patched and band-aided so much with Lasso, WebX, FileMaker 4.0, and supporting apps/extensions for all of that - and it runs two critical databases tied into the site.

I have FM versions all the way to 8.5...and do have a couple other sites and databases running on those - but just have not gotten around to completely overhauling this set up without breaking something - though I can easily bring the basic site, itself, over into Apache, etc...and then redirect back to the FM aspect of it all, but I'd rather just get it all done in one shot when I have time.

We also do quite a bit of video streaming on that site, but that redirects to a dedicated Xserve for QuickTime Streaming.

My college-age daughter still occasionally fires up the (please don't flame) Performa 638cd. Clariswork is still her word processor of choice and she beats out paper after paper for school on it. Surfing the web and IMing into the wee hours, happens on the eMac making Dad seriously consider picking up another laptop.

iMac G3 400 is my daughter's machine. We'll be retiring it in the fall when she starts High School. She wants a 20" iMac. We'll see.

I turned on the breadboard 6502 processor omputer I built for myself in Boy Scouts in 1973 last year. Does that count ?

Other than that- performa 636AV and Powerbook 5300C get used occasionally by the kids. But not so much any more since they can fight over Mom's new MacBook. mmm- dual core goodness wrapped up in a bright white polycarbonate sheath.

At home, I still use my 6400 for scanning, because the scanner is scsi. But I haven't had to scan anything for like a year -- which is exactly why I won't invest in a newer scanner. I hardly use the 6400 these days. It runs 8.6 and there's a scsi drive in the bay that runs 7.6.1 to accommodate an old word game that I still like to play sometimes, and also my Dawgz dog lives there. I lavished so much time and attention on upgrading the 6400 that I can't bring myself to put it away. Between that and my iMac DVSE I am running 4 obsolete operating systems. I like to call it a "hobby" so that there appears to be some purpose to all this. grinning smiley

Baby Tats, Those posts are so not 2007. Things may have changed since then.

Anyhow, people must enjoy discussing this or it wouldn't come up every so often. The idea of searching the forum for ancient threads, instead of discussing things with each other, seems really sad somehow. sad smiley

If we are never going to repeat ourselves again, we might as well close this place down. That's why I object to STFF, this place isn't a FAQ it's a forum.

$tevie-

I think you misunderstood my point. Nowhere, no time did I say STFF. I was merely pointing people to older threads so that they could read those as well, my point was not to end the discourse. This is after all a thread about history. Lighten up already. And I fail to see what is really sad about typing words into a search box and cutting and pasting two links. To me, what makes a forum "sad" is no one participating.

I love my Pismo 500 powerbook, even though I have a 17" Tibook G4 1.5.
My main working machine is a Dual G4 800 tower, even though I have a Dual G5 2.7 tower.

Why? I'm more comfortable with the older machines and they get the job done. The Pismo has the best form factor/keyboard action. The 17" is too big. The G5 tower creates too much heat and the fans blow to loud sometimes. Newer is not always better depending on your personal situation.

My main drawing program is Deneba Canvas vs. 3.5.6 and I drive a 23 year old car (diesel Mercedes) just to give you some perspective. Imagine how long it took me to upgrade from my venerable Mac IIci, one of the greatest macs invented (next to my Pismo).

That's kind of what I meant. We'd be coming here and looking for things and leaving again without talking to each other.

Sorry if I missed your point. I mistakenly took you for one of those "don't you dare repeat things ever" sorts.

BT- I didn't find the links offensive, your point was understood; it's kinda fun to check "progress" after yet another generation of machines comes online.

my response is still the same 7300 from last summer; though it can see the writing on the wall, as its days are numbered. the Beige G3 that would be next, will hopefully be exiting on the same trip, making an iMac G3400 DV/SE the old crown holder (or is it the Pismo?- gotta check the receipts in the shoebox...).

Sometimes it is what it is...
and then there's times when it's really better.

My daughter uses a powerbook 1400cs/166 from 1997 to play games. Works well for that.

I also use a 1400, in this case a 1400c/133. I use it to scan a variety of customer related documents into the system. Thanks to TLB for shipping me the 1400 Bookendz so I could easily convert the PowerBook SCSI to the more common 25pin SCSI connection and get the old Apple OneScanner 600/27 to good use.

The 1400c also makes for a great MP3 jukebox. I use MP3 Strip 1.5 as my preferred player of choice. A great little application which fits the entirety of itself into the control strip. Needs to have Quicktime installed in order to decode MP3s. Works like a charm and conserves the limited screen real estate I can put to better use during the scanning process. Turned off Virtual memory and now the MP3s don't even skip anymore while launching apps or doing other disk intensive tasks. Prior to MP3 Strip, I used SoundApp for the same task, but with Virtual memory off, RAM usage ballooned from 2MB to 5MB. Figured I may as well use the QuickTime MP3 strip tandem.
