Old family pictures I've never seen before...

We're able to visit with my 94 yo Aunt in her room again (don't know how long that will last) at her assisted living facility and my brother and I visited this past Friday. She had been brought some old family pictures by relatives that I haven't seen in years. These relatives are descendants of my Grandfather's sister. But I have never seen these images before and my Aunt had seen them but it had been a long, long time ago.

They are images of my paternal grandparents-my Aunt is my Dad's sister-but are mostly of my Grandmother. They are in paper photo frames and my Aunt would not let me take them out of the frames as there are no dates on the front of them and I wanted to look on the backs. She worried I might rip something if they didn't come out easily, so I am guessing at the dates. Here's a few...

My Grandmother with her younger brother around 1900:

Then, her grade school graduation:

A little bit later in life, not sure of the occasion:

And with her growing family-my Grandfather, my Uncle Al, and yes, my Dad on my Grandmother's lap. This was in 1917 as my dad was born in December of '16.

An interesting thing about these images as there are none of another son born between my Uncle and my Dad. He died of diphtheria when he was 3 years old and my Aunt said that at the time, if a child that young died, they threw away any pictures as if the child had never existed. We have no pictures anywhere of my unknown Uncle although he is in the family crypt in the mausoleum.

What fun to see these images, tho, especially as I had never, ever, seen them before!

Thx for looking in...

....A little maiden
climbed an old man's knee
Begged for a story
"Do, uncle, please!"
Why are you single?
Why live alone?
Have you no babies?
Have you no home?"

"I had a sweetheart, years, years ago
Where she is now, pet, you will soon know.
List to the story,
I'll tell it all
I believ'd her faithless, after the ball."

After the ball is over
After the break of morn
After the dancers' leaving
After the stars are gone;
Many a heart is aching
If you could read them all
Many the hopes that have vanished
After the ball.......

fabulous images.

love the texture and tonal quality of the prints.

how fortunate you are to share some cherished time with your aunt.

i welcome the opportunity to record oral histories whenever i can.

what was (fill in that moment in history) like and how did it change your day to day?

when did you meet?

what were your hopes?

there is some much to learn.

my go-to phrase so there are no "yes/no" answers, "tell me more".

and they always do.

stay well.

Aunts. These are great images. Were they in Detroit? That would be during that city's prime.

Nice images. Can’t imagine how they managed to get both children also looking in the proper direction, but good portrait photographers are magicians.

Nice images, thanks for posting!

Love the clothes.

I’ve worked on some oral history projects, and going through old images is a great way to start.

It’s unfortunate when there are some great family images but nobody left that can provide context.

Also, sometimes those with dementia can recall details from early in their lives more readily than recent ones.

my family was just up the road from yours at that time, they were in Saginaw. my Mother has an album full of old images from that time period. It took some doing but I got her to label them as no one but her knows who many of the people are.

oh, and Newt - your grandmother was a babe.

I prefer the grade-school version, myself

After the ball was over
Granny took out her glass eye.
Stood her false leg in the corner,
Hung up her hair to dry
Put her false teeth in the tumbler
Set down her arm to lie.
Piece after piece she sorted, carefully stored was it all.
'Til nothing was left of poor Granny Dear, after oh after the ball.

The park where we spend the winter has several music groups. I am a member of one of them. That song was part of our music program one year. Google the tune "After the Ball was Over".

Yes, in Detroit! The city was growing by leaps and bounds back then...

Very neat; on a tangentially related note, I recently discovered a photo of my Great-Grandfather's restaurant in Detroit in 1919 (which I'd heard many stories of, but haven't seen before); it opened in 1918, about a block up from Hudson's on Woodward (the building still exists, and is apparently available for lease). From the pieces I've been able to piece together, it appears both my maternal and paternal Great Grandparents settled in Detroit in the mid-1910s.

Of the top of my head that's at Woodward and John R. Street...

When are you coming home?

Yup - that's it (Woodward & John R); I want to get back to the area sometime in the next few years - now that I know a bit more of the family history, there are some places I want see.
If there's a highschool reunion, it'll take place in about two years - perfect excuse to make the trip...
