In Excel, how to insert date in a cell based on another cell?

A shared Excel spreadsheet asks people to enter their initials in one column (A) and today's date in another column (B).

Is there a way to leave the cells in column B empty until someone enters an initial in a cell in A. Entering initials should automatically insert the current date in the corresponding cell in B.

My first attempt using an IF statement in B1 does not work. The hope was that if A1 is blank, then nothing. If A1 has anything, then insert date.

=IF(A1="","",DATE)

Don C is my new hero. Thanks.

Online references kept suggesting diving deep into VBA. I had just started a lynda course to become familiar with VBA. Will continue with the course, but without the urgency.

Had I new how to compose a song, Don C would be remembered by ballad.

I think your expression might have worked if you had used “TODAY()” instead of “DATE”.

It is what it is.

Be aware that TODAY() will update when the sheet is recalculated

Vitus, thanks for the warning.

Since the spreadsheet has multiple users, it needs to hold non-dynamic (static) dates that won't update should someone re-calculate.

My initial research leads back to VBA. Any thoughts on how to automatically insert a static date? (Or, how to automatically convert a dynamic date to a static one?)

thanks again, Todd's kb

If the people are entering their initials in one column, would it be too much to ask them to put the date in the other?

you could copy the dynamic date and paste as value (might need to fix formatting.)

alternatively use CTRL + ; (semicolon)

a macro might automate this for you
