My 15-year-old daughter is taking a computer class in HS and has really enjoyed it. She talks about wishing that she could learn some coding but doesn't really know where to begin.
I wouldn't have expected it of her... she isn't a tech kind of person, but I think it's great for her to look into and teaches great skills.

Anyone here familiar with any ways to start the process of learning coding, and bonus points if it's geared towards teens still in HS.

Find a coding based on her personal interests. My 7 year old nephew started a Python for Minecraft online class and loves it. What are her personal interests / hobbies ? Where does her 'spark' lie ?

My coding started writing games (in the early 70's)... tic tac toe, adventure games like Zork, checkers, and then shifted to flight simulators. I dabbled in chess but it was TOO hard to automate with the technology available to a 12 year old. Wasn't able to get into a graphic capable computer until I was 16/17 at U Mo. Then I was all about biomedical imaging after reading The Terminal Man. So Much FORTRAN....

A very good question. Hopefully someone with recent experience will chime in because the search results I just looked at are flooded with 'free intro' classes but all seems charge for anything more.

Some universities now have free online courses but they might be a little more advanced than a high school student can deal with. Having specific/advanced math can provide an important assist (knowing algebra, floating point, matrices, etc.).

I still like BASIC. The C64 Mini includes BASIC and 64 games for $38. There are still versions that run on modern computers. Here’s a good article from Hackaday

It's kind of rudimentary, but Scratch is free and easy to pick up. Teaches the basics that translate to other languages.
