Eye Dr Offers Optomap. Should I?
Posted by: chopper

I have a Pearl Vision tomorrow for a annual eye exam.

They now offer something called "Optomap". It seems like a larger scan of the retina. Anyone ever done or know anything about it?

It's $40 and not covered by insurance.

I got retinal photos taken at the eye Dr. in a Costco a few years ago. I think it was about the same price. Not medically necessary but very cool to see. Looked a lot like planets I thought. They emailed me a PDF for each eye.

Not mine, but this is what you could expect to see:

Chopper,

That sounds way awesome! Found this which provides some insight:

Based on the above info, I'd spend the bucks on it. I like the idea of having images the doctor can reference to see how my retinas have changed over time. That's worth something to me. Definitely a good thing for everyone in general and especially good for people with illnesses that can affect their vision, i.e. diabetics.

My ophthalmologist has been doing it for years. It's covered by our insurance (VSP), so I haven't questioned it. It does seem useful for any number of issues.

I’ve been getting those for years, also paying out of pocket for mine. I’m very near sighted, so it’s a good way to track the health of the eye and possible issues like retina detachment.

Under Medicare, I get an annual Diabetic Retinopathy exam as part of
my vision exam. It includes SLO (aka-optomap) but is done
by my (board certified) ophthalmologist. He says it is useful if done correctly.
This is considered 'post-cataract surgery' care, so I pay nothing.

iirc, if you have Type 2 Diabetes a yearly Retinopathy exam may be covered
under insurance.

I'm not sure what value this have if you're not visiting an ophthalmologist for potential surgery.

Does the optician or optometrist review them and refer you to an ophthalmologist?

Does the optician or optometrist not look at the retina if you don't pay?

Every two years I get an eye exam followed by a refraction.

The former provides pics of the retinas but I've never thought to ask for copies.

Maybe I will next time and see what they say.

I did it once, not sure where though so it is probably useless as I wouldn't know where to get it from. Make sure they either give you a record or send it to your primary care doctor so that it can be added to your medical record.
