How do I read the square code?

I have never used that square code. Suddenlink says “scan” into iPhone for instructions to install new receiver they sent.

Just phot the square code? I’m lost.

Newt nailed it. The link will appear as a mini-Notification at the top of the Camera screen - easy to miss if you don’t know what to look for.

It is what it is.

Or if you get a 2nd notification that covers it up (happens to me a lot with security camera notifications).

There's also a double-secret hidden app for reading QR codes.

Apparently, the only way to access it is to search for 'Code Scanner' on your iPhone, or iPad.

But, you didn't hear it from me.

not so secret. it’s in the camera settings

Settings>Camera>Scan QR Codes

That setting just toggles the Camera app’s ability to read QR codes on and off.

Yes, the Camera app can be set to scan QR codes.

But, for reasons known only to Apple engineers, there is a hidden, standalone app called 'Code Scanner'
that does nothing but read QR codes, can only be found by searching, and once you're done with it, 'POOF', it disappears until you summon it again.

Notably, it skips the notification step, and whisks you directly to wherever the code links.

Try it.

yeah but sometimes it's on a device or a piece of paper and the QR is easier/faster than typing in a URL on my phone.

Yeah, I guess they can be the best way, but they just never caught on enough to make them something I want to use.
Also, I am just grumpy today. Lol

Here in COVID Central, restaurants don't hand out physical menus. You scan a QR code and get the menu on your phone.

My Amtrak ticket was a QR code in their app.

Some things need a pandemic to catch on.

The check-in for my son's first covid shot was a QR code sent to him by email. I guess we as a society have determined that everyone has a smartphone.

I never really "got it" until recently. Seemed like a convoluted way to type in a web address. But, yeah, when sitting down at a restaurant, scanning a code for a menu makes a lot more sense than navigating to the restaurant's website and digging to find the menu. A much easier ask for the restaurant too.

It can also make it (a little) less painful when logging into an app on a streaming device. Scan the code, and jump immediately to a page where you can enter your login credentials on your phone.

I was cleaning out a file drawer a few days ago and found a thick comparative market analysis a real estate agent had prepared for us a few years ago. I wanted to scan it to get rid of the clutter, but that would have been a chore because it was bound. I noticed it had a QR code which took me right to the online document. The web address was lengthy garble of characters.

Of course, the agent could have just as easily emailed me the link, but I thought this was a pretty good use case.
