on the phone with apple looking to extend applecare for my 2017 imac [update] prices for annual extension of APP+ added

I thought I'd look up the pricing for extending warranty.

My iMac was purchased on ebay and to my surprise, it had applecare+ applied. It expires in august and I thought I'd see what the deal is.

The deal is COMPLICATED.

According to this: [support.apple.com]

I can get more coverage annually that is auto renewed.

The apple agent I talked to a specialist and I was told that my machine is too old to be extended. There is no mention of age or any other limitations on the support page above.

She is going back and finding another 'specialist' to see what that one says.

Got to an agent in 1 min, but this could be a long haul...

turns out that first bit of info was CS BS as I call it - you don't know so you make it up.

I read the text of the support page and gave her the link and when she came back, she had a different bit of info.

She admitted that this was just too new to make it into the knowledge of reps. If you've ever worked CS, you are given a gigantic binder of info that you are supposed to learn, but you also get daily emails that you are also supposed to know.

Anyway, I have full understanding now.

Within 30 days of the expiration of your warranty, you can extend the warranty of your mac (and other devices, but I was only asking about mac) and here is the price list.

This is for ONE year of extra coverage that is renewed annually until cancelled (so be vigilant):

Mac Pro: $109.99/yr
Mac Mini: $34.99/yr
MBA: $89.99/yr
MBP13: $99.99
MBP15/16: $139.99
All iMac: $59.99

that's a bargain for the mini and imac. I will be extending my warranty when I get closer to expiration in august.

Hal,

Many thanks for this information! I'll definitely take advantage of it. I have several machines that qualify. smiling smiley

Me too, the iMac price is a no brainer.

That MacPro pricing might also be a good deal given the cost of some of the configurations of that system. And if it also includes attached peripherals like the monitor, monitor stand and wheels, that too might be a no brainer.

Wow, I have a 2018 MBP13. $100/year is a nice deal until I decide to replace it.

Do these warranty extensions transfer if you sell the Mac?

I don't know and I wouldn't trust what I said if I did because this is such a new program, apple CS doesn't fully understand it themselves.

How would this interface with the AmEx purchase protection?

I am not sure how it works. IIRC Amex has a limit, you can add one year after the warranty expires, and I think only for item with 5 year of les warranty. You cannot use this plan for 6 years and then add one more with Amex.

Just looked it up... Drag! (I have Blue Cash)

"Under its current terms, American Express can provide up to two extra years to an original U.S. manufacturer's warranty of five years or less when you use your card on new eligible purchases. This perk currently applies to all American Express cards. Starting Jan 1, 2020, the extended warranty will drop to one year. Terms apply.

Although the extended warranty benefit currently applies to all American Express cards, it will no longer be offered on four no-annual-fee consumer cards:

Blue from American Express®.
Amex EveryDay® Credit Card (see rates and fees).
American Express Cash Magnet® Card (see rates and fees).
Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express (see rates and fees)."
