Apple Watch Update. What a cluster frack.
Posted by: space-time

I have an Apple Watch series 3. I do not have any music on it, just a few apps (bank apps, a small calculator, etc.)

Capacity; 4.7 GB
Available: 2.4 GB

I started the update, I was wearing the watch, battery 95% full. Nothing happened, so I read more carefully and I noticed that I need to put it on the charger. Fine. still nothing. I started looking into capacity and available space, so I posted the info above.

As I was typing this, I get a message on the locked iPhone that I need 3.2 GB and I should delete some Apps using the iPhone Watch App. fine. I go there and the only option is to CANCEL the update, which will unpair and reset the watch.

What a cluster frack this is.

Sometimes the times increase with increased traffic to the update servers. It might go faster at another time.

My series 4 updated in about 20 minutes yesterday. With Watch updates, you always need to leave it in the charger until it's done.

Gotta say, being able to unlock my phone while wearing my mask-- without my passcode-- is super helpful!

My experience updating my series 3 recently pretty much matched space-time's. Took a long time, needed extra space, complete watch restet, etc. Eventually worked but a pain.

it stopped for some reason, I had to start over, the phone is 2" away from watch, both are plugged in and batteries are full. It's been abut 1 hour and I still have one hour to go.

I am so glad I went with an Apple pocketwatch.

It sounds like the 3 Series is problematic with later updates.

It's only been a problem with iOS devices for... 11 (?) years. You would think by now they would have stopped selling devices with an amount of storage so crippled that it can't download updates.

I agree. It was the latest model when I bought in in April 2018. just 3 years ago. It is already obsolete as far as watch OS updated go. Now it is at the "preparing" stage and moving slower than a tectonic plate. This is for a devices that has been nuked and paved.

AW3 was released in September 2017 and a few months after you bought your AW3 Apple released AW4. Time marches on. Your watch is far from a brick and has a lot of use but the model is 4 years old.

Yes, a pet peeve of mine. All Apple Watches have WiFi and Apple insists that the watch be connected to the charger for updates so why does it use Bluetooth for data transfer instead of WiFi?

So ridiculous…

My Apple Watch 3 took about 3 hours to update.

Now it is finally installing. All this time it was downloading (I am not sure if that was from the Apple server to iPhone or from iPhone to Watch). Then it was "verifying". Finally installing. I started this entire process in the late morning and it's 4 PM and sill not done.

watch says please continue setup on iPhone.

iPhone says 'installing" but there is no progress bar, nothing.

it's been like this for 30 min now.

So as I mentioned the other day...

Series 3: 8 gig memory
Series 4: 16 gig memory
Series 5: 32 gig memory
Series 6: ????

They have added a ton of features to WatchOS in the last 4 years...fall protection, all of the cardio stuff, cycle tracking, hand wash tracking...much of which is useful to many people. There is not an option to install WatchOS 7.4 Lite because we have super old devices.

I was talking about this with an Apple upper echelon employee (on a ski chairlift) the other day and I compared it to trying to cram Algebra into a 4th graders head. It can be done, but it takes a lot of pushing and cajoling, and probably some tears. They thought it was an accurate analogy.

I had sworn after the last update that I wouldn't do it agin, but I wanted the ability to unlock my phone whilst wearing a mask. That said, I am going to get a Series 6 soon. Remarkably the trade in on this relic S3 is still $85.

Do you have the cellular version. It has 16 GB. The GPS version only has 8 GB as Markintosh stated. I have the GPS version and have had to wipe and set up as a new watch with the past several updates.

No, but there are different builds of watchOS 7.4, or any watchOS versions, for different Watches, as all don't support the same feature sets.

One can't chose a version of a specific Update version, but it can very with hardware.

I had a Series 2 (I think) that I had a 'not enough free space' to update, though the 'About...' said I had more than enough, a lot more.

Jettisoning apps, music, pics and video didn't help.

A Restore from Backup didn't help.

The only thing that did, was to unpair and pair, and restart the 'Phone.
