...re-caulking is a mutha!

I'm so glad that's not an annual chore.

I've read on a few DIY forums that one should first fill the tub with a good amount of water to ensure that the caulk will not be stretched (and potentially separate) while the tub is in use. I've never done that before, and it seems like if your tub is moving downward after filling then maybe the supports beneath are insufficient, however the logic seems sound, since it is better to have caulk in compression instead of tension.

You'll get some deformation of most modern tubs when full, especially the poly but even the thin steel. The old cast-irons maybe not so much.
