I know I shouldn't expect too much of the USPS, but really?

According to my USPS Informed Delivery Digest from last Tuesday, I was supposed to have received my Settlement check from that Cruise line class action suit in the mail that day. There was a scan of the piece of mail, as usual. But the piece wasn't in the mailbox. I noted that it was not received and looked to see what else I could do. Right in the email, it says: Mail may arrive several days after you receive this notification. Please allow up to a week for delivery before reporting missing mail.

So I saved the email notification and waited.

Today (a week later), i clicked the link to Report missing mail and am greeted with:
Submit Missing Mailpieces - Link Expired
Your link has expired. Mail images are only available in your mail dashboard for seven days.
.

Granted, I am not dependent on the whopping $10 or so I might get in the settlement, but it does kind of piss me off that someone else got something that was pretty obviously a check and that was clearly and accurately addressed to me. But what's just as frustrating is the instruction from the postal service to wait a week, only to then be informed that I waited too long.

All hope is not lost. It's a check for $2.50, and if it never shows up, then after a few years it will probably be sent to your state's unclaimed property department. Then someday you'll search that and find a hit for your name, and you can then fill out lots of paperwork proving that you are the rightful owner and get your $2.50 back.

That's true. I'll finally get to see my name on that list! And I've heard it's more like $22.04. Woohoo!

The checks from last August were larger, this recent check is for exactly $2.50, seems like some residual money that they're paying out equally.

That happened to me too. So, now I wait 5 delivery days from when I received the email and then report it.
My current mail carrier is terrible. He's lost 14 pieces of mail since I signed up for Informed Delivery last July; including a water bill and a 1099 tax document. He also delivers other people's mail to me at least once a month.

Once a month? You're lucky, I see it every week. I've twice in the past
month rec'd. small Amazon packages via USPS that belonged to someone
THREE streets away!
Stories now being reported of mail carriers just leaving entire trays in their
trucks for days. Can't blame that on a 'lack of equipment' can they?

...and here's something to ponder...
Last year, the 1st Class Mail volume was 52,624 Million pieces.
In 2000, it was 103,526 or almost double.
