I knew that there was a gap growing between PayPal and eEbay, but only today did I realize I would no longer be able to pay or collect money via PayPal.

I have no interest in connecting my eBay account to my bank account. I like the extra layer of protection there.

For buying, no bank account needed. You can enter a credit card directly in eBay now.

For selling, yes, you need to connect a bank account.

As a buyer, I resolve all my issues through the eBay system, so I've never needed to resort to PayPal's protection specifically. But if eBay failed me, I'd just go to my credit card company instead, I guess. Frankly, as a buyer, that's hard to see happening as they are pretty buyer-centric.

I don't sell all that often on eBay anymore. I go in spurts. Opening a store subscription to save a bit on fees, sell a bunch of stuff, then shut down the store. Since I have a checking account I only used for PayPal anyway (only maintaining the minimum balance need to avoid fees), that's the one I'll use for eBay. But I'm also trying out Mercari for selling since there's only a 3-day grace period for disputes and after that, you get paid and the transaction is closed (but 13% fees no matter what).

I gave ebay my bank info - it's fine

I have had a dedicated account linked to PayPal for years, and now it's linked to eBay, too. I keep a small balance in it because, well, people keep telling me eBay or PayPal is going to CLEAN ME OUT!!1! but it hasn't happened yet.

I do understand your hesitancy, but I don't think I could use ebay any less than I have in the last four years. Maybe find a second bank/credit union that has low minimum deposit requirements and use that for ebay.

Yes, definitely.

And not that it's relevant to your questions but I actually prefer ebay to Amazon for a lot of things.

My wife sells on eBay and she was VERY unhappy. But, we have a credit union checking account that we use for direct deposits of pensions and SS that I clean out every month as things are deposited. She set that up for eBay. I now keep $100 in it for her eBay sales just in case they automatically refund somebody.

I've asked a similar question here relative to linking a checking account and I've yet to link my main account to eBay although they've reminded me about 100 times. I've got 4 things for sale on eBay at the moment and can't make any revisions to them before linking an account. Strangely, I can sell items using that existing account. But no new listing, either. I've got to find a low balance checking account to use, as I'm really against linking my main checking account.

but, can they take more than what you sold? if you sell an item for $100, and if the buyer complains, I assume that most eBay can take from your account is that $100. They have no right to take more.

So what is try risk if you link your main account?

I have my accounts between banks linked to each other, and I also have a bank account linked to Amazon from when I used to sell. I also have my accounts linked with Verizon (Fios), water and electric/gas company, etc. I never had a company take more than the bill.

On a related note, I was using PayPal to collect money paid for one of my original songs as a download for a while until I got a notice that I needed to supply them with my SS# in order to continue. I used to leave the money I earned in my account and debit it as I made purchases with PP. I decided I didn’t want PP to have my SS# considering the small amount the song generated so I stopped selling it. They now want a bank account for refunds I have gotten on some of the purchases I’ve made.

The risk is that you're giving them permission to take money from your account and they can mistakenly (or maybe somebody nefariously!) take out more than they should. That can cause a huge mess with other payments you're making from the account.

I've known too many people who've had their PayPal accounts frozen, cleaned out or otherwise withdraw from without their consent because of eBay. Either because of a scam, bogus dispute or some other reason. There's no way I'm connecting my bank account to eBay. Guess that means I'm done selling there.

We have an online account with Ally I clean out once a month into our main checking. I basically treat it like a monthly paycheck. Used to do the same thing with PayPal before eBay switched us to managed payments.

I may end up doing that. That said, selling things locally has become a lot easier over the years, even for less common items.
