I built a 16GB RAM/256GB SSD Hackintosh in a somewhat small desktop case in 2014 because I was disappointed in the Mini offerings at the time. I’ve over the years become exhausted with the Hack part of the device during system upgrades, but once configured properly it works wonderfully, and the i7-3.5GHz CPU still feels snappy for what I use it for even without a GPU.

This M1 Mini is a top of the line 2021 Mini configuration but except for the processor speed it’s a seven-year-old spec as far as I’m concerned. I’m not tempted in the least, even at $800. I feel like I should be tempted, that Apple should have me squarely in its sights for the new Mini. Is there something wrong with me?

I built a hack in maybe 2009? It worked great most of the time, but updates and any problems were days of messing with it. Moved to an MP and never looked back.

That is nice, but I managed to score an open box Mini for considerably less, so got the base model.

Yeah, that’s what I had done too - open box base model mini, only 2 weeks into the warranty, for $539 + tax

I posted this deal b/c 16/256 is normally build to order - no stores actually keep stock of this config, even Apple stores

But I’ve noticed recently that Microcenter was keeping stock of 16/256 M1 Airs and, now, minis too

If u are strictly looking at numbers… sure. But it’s not like Apple has ever been the “cheap” option.

And this isn’t your grandpas ram or SSD. It works totally different.

Out of curiosity how much was that 256 GB SSD in 2014? $200?

Agreed. 16GB RAM on an S1 Mac is far more efficient than Intel, and our M1 MBA behaves as fast or faster than my i9 Intel Mac.

It’s amazing the 2TB SSD variant is almost $1000 more.

That's as relative as comparing it to a homebrew Hackintosh.

For a lot of people, a Hack just isn't worth the effort, no real ROI, especially as noted when it comes to OS upgrades.

That, and given the fact that a 16/256 config of an M1 even for 800 2021 dollars is more out of the box computer than a lot of users have ever had, "pretty basic" is pretty damn good.

If you want to wait for 32G/1T M2, fine.

But as noted here, that pretty basic config has been pretty popular.

I noticed that right off.

Apple used to show upgrade prices in store (maybe they still do) but they were always BTO nee CTO.

It makes me wish there were a Micro Center near me (used to be years back).

I think that deal is better than I could get from Apple with the Mil/Vet discount, and would provide instant gratification!
