DNS Server(s)

Is it permissible to have more than one DNS server set in Network Preferences? If it is, how does the computer decide which server to use?

Have heard that some servers are faster and somewhat more secure than others…

Yes.

It tries the 1st one and if it gets no response or an error then it tries the 2nd one.

Yes to more than one.

The top server gets tried first. I can't remember when or how the next server in line gets used, It may be from a time-out on the first one.

You can drag them in to a preferred order.

I think I will just put an OUT OF ORDER
sticker on my head and call it a day.

Do you remember when it seemed like a great idea to always set 8.8.8.8 as your DNS server to harness Google's raw power? It seemed like a good idea at the time.

Well, I use Google as a last resort. Here's the list of DNS's I use, in search order.
IP addresses (1st column) only. The comment # text shows what DNS is at the IP address.

192.168.1.1      # The router

1.1.1.1          # Cloudflare primary
1.0.0.1          # Cloudflare secondary

9.9.9.9          # Quad9 primary
149.112.112.112  # Quad9 secondary

208.67.222.222   # OpenDNS primary
208.67.220.220   # OpenDNS secondary

8.8.8.8          # Google primary          IPv6:   2001:4860:4860::8888
8.8.4.4          # Google secondary        IPv6:   2001:4860:4860::8844

I'd be interested in anybody's suggestions for a "better" search list!
