Why doesn't macOS recognize Apple keyboards?

I just started my 2012 Mini (Catalina) and I plugged in an Modern Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad (A1243). The first one shown here

Why do I get this message??? How come OS X/macOS cannot recognize an Apple keyboard that is not very old?

Apple hasn't made a wired USB keyboard since 2017 and those keyboards date back to 2007. So, it's not clear that it really is "recent."

It's nevertheless odd that your Mac seems to be unable to identify it as an Apple keyboard. Do you have anything connected to the USB port on the left or right side of the keyboard? It may be that you have a dongle connected that's causing the message to pop up.

I had some Mac that I wanted to use an older Apple wired aluminum keyboard, and it required a update to do so.

I have no independent recollection of the models or OSs involved, but an update was specifically required to use the keyboard.

I have to go through this whenever I use my Apple Extended II with a new Mac for the first time.

I plugged in my A1048 keyboard to my new M1 Mini a couple of weeks ago, and I had no problems with it being recognized.
