Monthly staff meeting, it’s our turn to present

For the past several months each department has taken a turn. Some slides are shared, outlining what each person or the department does. It’s a refresher for everyone else, I guess so that we all get to know each other better.

Yes there’s an obligatory photo showing you with your pets/kids/significant other, maybe also a hobby photo.

It’s our turn at the wheel next month and I was volunteered to emcee (and organize) for my department. I barely know enough about PowerPoint but that’s not my biggest challenge (nor is public speaking).

I’m looking for ideas.
- I keep coming back to the thought of, what is it about your job/responsibility you want everyone else to know?

I think we’re planning on about a 15-min presentation and there are 7 of us in our group. That’s less than 3 minutes per person, which is OK. I don’t want it to be slides with boring job description lists, but a fancy multimedia presentation won’t happen either.

Wildcard option: We create a scripted sketch and role play, possibly even switching roles so that someone else plays the role of another job within the group (humor is appreciated.)

The only presentation I can remember is from Accounting, and their slides were just as dry and boring as you’d expect. Their emcee skipped over a bunch of the text and made comments about how boring it all was and it was hilarious. (Had to be there obviously.)

I don’t have the pom-poms for that.

Random ideas
- mock job interviews for each person, but played by someone else. Could be serious or funny perhaps. Could be interviewing for current job or similar job elsewhere.

I was thinking of a group conversation that depicted a scenario all 7 of us would have input on but that might be tougher (and more boring.)

Pop-sickle stick figures would be truly bizarre. Little voodoo dolls.

You can’t go wrong bringing in a stripper or two.

As a refresher, I think role playing would be funny, but potentially confusing for someone else who doesn't really know your face(s) in the first place.

How is each team member handling the question, "What is worth doing now?"

IIRC, this was the question Stewart Brand asked of the participants at the Whole-Earth party he hosted. Stewart had been given $20,000 to help create the first catalog. The anonymous donor did not want the money back, so Stewart decided to use it as green energy.

That’s a great question. Each person could craft an answer. Maybe like a mini essay.

We have our first team meeting in a few hours to bounce off some ideas

probably the best 'presentation' I ever gave was when I visited a group to explain project management. I walked in with a briefcase full of overhead slides (yeah, this was the 90's). Looked at the panicked faces (A major medical organization's new IT organization that was VERY lost).

Tossed the slides aside. Sat down. And said "let's talk about your problems".

A one hour presentation turned into a three hour free consulting session, and I left a hopeful group with a bunch of documentation. A few of them joined our chapter of PMI and they turned things around.

But FOR GODS SAKE DON"T READ THE DAMN SLIDES !

Back in my working days we talked about the "elevator speech." Someone asks as you enter the elevator what you do and you have the time it takes to go 5 floors to explain the essence.

That said, I could imagine tailoring you comments to the audience. What do we do that impacts your work? We project product sales and pass that on to purchasing and production. My role in that is ...

Seconded. Don’t read the damn slides. And don’t put so much on the slide that people EITHER read the slide or listen to you. I see that more often than not, and I cannot abide it.

Have each person interview/report on a different team member.
