they got up and running because of their backups, not because they paid the ransom, but the did pay the ransom.

And they likely had insurance, and so, not a lot of incentive to change the passwords or whatever.

However, you'd think any insurance bond would require certain steps be done for security?? My auto insurer kindly asks they I don't get drunk prior to turning the key.

It isn't the industry that was hacked, it was a company or consortium.

The problem is, the ransom is probably covered by insurance (loss of business).

The tool speed depends entirely on how much data was encrypted and how fast their systems CPU, network and storage are that are running the decryption. It is generally about as long as it took to encrypt it in the first place. IT is obviously not these guys strong suit. They should have been able to estimate how long it would take to decrypt the amount of data they had. I'm guessing these guys don't have encrypted laptops or thumb drives in use at all or they would know all this...

that comes to about 10 million per week, and they paid only 5 million and got back online in one week. So they paid 1/2 of a week's revenue.

People always complain about insurance companies using tricks not to pay a claim, such as not covering because of some violation of the contract.

I hope this is one of those occasions.
