Is there an app that will do this...

I have never listened to podcasts. They take up far too much time.

I'd like an app that will accept podcasts in the form of an mp3, YouTube video, or any form of online streaming, and turn it into a text file.

Can anything do this?

Some podcasts have transcripts.

Also, some apps allow you to play at 2x speed.

Why would listening to a podcast take more time than reading a transcript of it?

Because you can skim the written portion and just read the parts that interest you. You really can't effectively skip through audio that you have never heard before. I find many podcasts maddening and slow, I seldom even bother with audio or video content.

Some folks are really fast readers. When I was in high school, there was a guy who was measured at reading 1800 words per minute.

Yeah, skimming and speed reading are powerful tools.

I probably only need about 5-10 minutes to read the transcript of a one hour podcast.

I've never understood why they became popular. Maybe for people who like to listen to them when they're stuck in traffic or something?

Have you tried feeding the Mac Dictation a podcast? Most of the apps on the store are over $100 or cost per hour of content, and seem to be designed for podcast owners to generate transcripts.

I still remember the time I bought my dad a hardcover book that was really popular and he finished it in about 45 min. He told me he worked for a newspaper print shop in his teens, and he could read over 1000 wpm (a full half page column as fast as the machine could push them out), plus upside down and backwards (proof read forms). A year later I got just over 600 wpm training with filmstrip for a couple of weeks, but was only second fastest in my class.

I'm dating myself here, but I remember when my dial up modem downloaded text so slowly that I could easily keep up reading it as it displayed (one line at a time) on my monitor. I think it was a 300 baud dial up modem.

i listen to podcasts daily while exercising on my treadmill or walking in the park. I also listen to them on roadtrips, while cooking, or cleaning and folding laundry. It's the new radio except you get to choose the playlist of information.

btw, i sort of feel the way you do about YouTube videos. Of late I've taken to increasing the playback speed to at least 1.5 to save me some time.

just about everyone can read faster than they can talk.

Yeah, I can't count how many 10 minute YouTube videos there are that could be edited down to 3-4 minutes without losing any information.

Agreed. Even when it comes to news stories. When I come across a CNN story I'll skip the video and go right to the text.

Most YouTube videos need an editor.

So many people should be making them, providing a 20min video with 4min of information.

I really dislike those that beging with 'Today I'll show you how...', code for '...to do something I've never done before without any preparation and or research so consider this much more of a cautionary tale than a teaching moment'.
