That is an amazing video. The bassist is phenomenal the way she moves around the fingerboard. The drummer seems to have to most personality and is underutilized.

That was fun!

Sorry, but What Is Hip is not hip without Chester Thompson.

If you've ever heard Chester interviewed, you'd know what a kind, generous guy he is. He'd be saying was an awesome drummer she is... 'cause she is really good!

I was actually referring to CT, Chester Thompson the keyboard player who was on the original recording playing a B3 and also playing on the live link. He went on to play with Santana for many years. While most would consider the Japanese women brave to attempt the song I can’t not help but think of Tower of Power when I hear it. By comparison it’s kinda pale IMHO. Kudos to them for going for it. Tough to compete with TOP, probably the most famous horn section of all time. Lenny Pickett was in the section at that time, who you likely recognize from SNL.

Ok, that was pretty sweet!

A great blend of flavors!

BUT— ToP is still the greatest!

I've seen them live twice and they've got a really tight band.

Much love for the horn section.

That live version is a faster tempo and really visceral.

Wow.

Two great finds!

My favorite cuts were:

Down to the Nightclub
Back on the Streets again
Bump City

There were a couple more I liked, that escape me, but one of their biggest hits was You're Still a Young Many, and I hated it then, and to this day.

When, in more recent years, a radio station would play a ToP song, it was almost always that one.

Ugh.

I lost touch with most of their later stuff.

I can listen to B3 and pretty much any keyboard funk all day.

Sure, Jyoshi wouldn't replace ToP for me, but they're a fine addition.

But then I have maybe 25 versions of Summertime on my iStuff.

haha..., I knew there was another Chester Thompson, but forgot - was also thinking, 'I didn't know that [the other] CT played in ToP' :-)

That’s Juna Serita on bass. She calls herself “Princess of Funk” and has quite a following for obvious reasons. She was the first bass player of Tokyo Groove Jyoshi, a band of Japanese session musicians, and has been over here in the USA recently doing promotion for herself. I really like the drummer, Yuriko Seki. She has a nice pocket to her grooves.

Here’s a very Japanese version of another funk classic Juna did:
