Cold Hearted Coffee.... Does anyone Cold Brew their own ?

Kids seem to be obsessed with it. At $5 a bottle at Aldi, it's getting pricey. I wonder if anyone uses on of the many cold brew infusers on the market. It would probably pay for itself in a month...

.....it is relatively easy to do.....I have a french press which I use for that......in the summer, I don't drink hot coffee only cold brew......put in overnight......just remember that with cold brew, you use more coffee grounds than hot coffee.......and they charge a lot for those bottled cold brews......

.....to save money, you can just use a jar but you will have to filter it......the infusers can be expensive for something that is relatively easy to make.......

Wife uses the Toddy system, it's about $40.

Just plug the bottom, put in the filter and fill it up with grind and water. Let it sit for as long as you want, then when ready to drain remove the plug and set it on the jar.

You'll want to rinse out the filter after each use, and then replace after several months of use.

Yeah you can do it just like tea: You have to have heat to make it work, then toss it in the freezer for a while and / or fridge.

If you can wait, the procedure is just that simple.

“ You have to have heat to make it work “

You can also do it just with cold water; coarse ground beans, 4 to 1 coffee beans to water, +/- 12 hrs soaking time.

You can then run it through a french press or Melita type setup.

Yes. I make it 4 liters at a time. Grind the beans coarse, mix in the H2O let it sit for 15-18 hours, strain, use a Melitta to filter out the fine stuff...into the fridge for both cold and microwaved coffee. Not bitter. Tastes better the better grade coffee you use. Currently using Guatemalan from Costco.

Same with tea, only 13 hours.

Love the cold brew.

I'm using a County Line Kitchen system. Costs ~ $30 for the 2 quart size and uses Mason Jars. Uses a stainless steel filter & since the filter is inside the jar, it needs occasional shaking to help the water come in contact w/ the grounds. I picked up a couple of extra jars & lids in order to have the next one brewing before running out.

Currently using Kicking Horse Coffee - Grizzly Claw. Really liking it.

as others have written. ground beans, high ratio, cold water, 12+ hours in the fridge in a jar.
filter conventionally or an old sock for robust flavor.

I use TJs decaf French (which are not the best beans, but not junk either) and my spouse loves it. She dilutes even further with ice and milk.

Got the method from a local roaster what sells all kind of accoutrements for coffee and tea. He steered me off the gear and into the jar method.
I tasted both at his shop. If there is a difference it was lost on me.
But I don't drink decaf or cold.

I'd bet some of that Aldi bottled stuff has other ingredients the kids is crazy for. Sugar of some kind, natural and "artificial" (aka rejected rocket fuel) flavors, TikTok extract, rejected Taylor Swift lyrics.

When I started I was using a jar, but had issues with filtering it and making a huge mess and takes a bit of time. I'm too impatient for that, and the mess and bother was a bit of a turn-off.

I've been doing it using my usual (cheap-ish) coffee in a (cheap) plastic and metal french press, as I don't intend to use heat. Twice the amount of grounds as I would for hot brew, set it in the fridge for about 24 hours and then press. A lot faster than trying to pour it through a coffee filter, and a lot less mess. Drink and enjoy. I empty the grounds when I have finished the coffee. Dilute with cold water or milk (or not, as the mood strikes). A side benefit I recently noticed is that the carafe has a "seal" that you release with your thumb when you pour from it; when I used a jar, I had to drink it fairly quickly or it would develop floating "stuff" in it, but with the french press I haven't seen that happen even though it's been in the fridge for at least the amount of time I would have seen that stuff grow. Nada, nothin'.

True, not great beans but good enough for my purposes. Freeze some milk in ice cube trays to fancy up your drink.

That reminds me, I need to get more milk.

4:1, coarse grind, at least 12 hours in fridge or on counter. Can then run thru press or just pour thru a filter (slow). No need for anything too fancy. The advantage of cold brew process is less bitterness. I do this frequently to add to beer.

I don't like coffee but I made it a few times with 6:1 water to beans overnight in a big pickle jar. I used a basic cheap filter the next day and drank it cold. If someone wanted it hot, I nuked it a few seconds. It was less bitter like that.
