Guess I just need to talk, high probability of cancer
Posted by: Grateful11

This all happened pretty fast. I had a PSA test about 2 1/2 weeks ago at my PC physician and it was high 5.5 and he put me on Flomax and an antibiotic, tested after the antibiotic was finished, 10 days, and still tested 5.5. I got in to see my Urologist within a few days and retested at 5.7. He ordered an MRI for this past Monday and the results aren't very good. My prostate is over twice as big as it should be. I have a PI-RADS score of 4. 1 being the best and 5 being the worst chance of it being cancer. My prostate is 6.2 x 4.7 x 4.9 cm and 62cc capacity, should be 25cc. They found a 1.4 x 0.9 x 1.1 cm lesion/tumor fairly deep inside. My Urologist is sending me to a specialist in Charlotte, NC for a Ultrasound combined with the MRI data guided needle biopsy. He said our local hospital won't spend the money for the software to allow them to do this type biopsy, they have the equipment but not the software. So I'm playing the waiting game to see when they can get me in in Charlotte.

I get a PSA test every year but for some reason even with all the blood work I had done last year they didn't order a PSA test. I was really, really sick from late Feb. through Mar. of 2020. My family still says I had Covid but they would not test me for it because they said there wasn't enough cases in our area to warrant testing. Our son got sick first and he's never sick and got over whatever it was in about 4 or 5 days.

Sorry just needed to unload a bit, it's really difficult to talk about it with my immediate family, they're pretty worried about it all, can't say I'm not worried either.

Wow, sorry to hear that!

Since you’re playing the waiting game, perhaps start looking carefully at your insurance coverage so you don’t get stuck with unexpected bills.

Take care of yourself as much as you can, both mentally and physically, don’t let stress blow you out of the water.

Will be thinking of you.

You have my sympathies. Waiting is just awful - better when you know exactly what you’re facing.
Fortunately, prostate cancer treatment is usually successful.

yes, as Pupp noted, the remission of this particular cancer seems to be better than many others. I hope you fall into that category.

Virtual hugs coming your way. Prostate issues are eminently treatable, so your general outcome is going to be good. Yeah, it's gonna suck. Keep on it, get diagnosed, get treated. And treat yourself from time to time.....

I still smile when I remember a high school friend's brother... he became a quadriplegic in a pool diving accident. A doctor told him 'a beer a day' would keep his urinary tract healthy. He figured a six pack would probably work better. He was a happy guy...

Sending positive vibes your way.

The waiting game sucks, but knowledge is power, and keeping a positive attitude does make a huge difference in outcome.

S. Pupp is correct that prostate has a high treatment success rate. There are quite a few others for which that's NOT the case.

Grateful,

My 50 year-old son just went through that - aggressive type of prostate cancer was the result. Two of the choices he had are the radio active pill placed inside the tumor and prostate removal. He chose removal and is doing fine. Sore for about two weeks.

My golfing buddy had the radio active "bullet" option, and he was sore for about two weeks but it did the job. This occurred about 25 years ago.

Both cases required followup checkups for 3 years (i believe) at decreasing frequency.

I believe prostate cancer has one of the highest survival rates.

Scary word, but all odds are on your side.
It sucked skipping last year, many things were.
I can’t imagine though, what would it be to have been diagnosed then, and not having treatment available.

Grateful11, I am so sorry to hear you have joined the club no one wants to be in. Being alarmed is understandable. You do have the chance now to educate yourself and take a proactive stance in directing your treatment. (Wish I had had that chance…) Being informed and comfortable with your treatment decisions will go a long way in lowering anxiety.

The ultrasound/MRI needle biopsy will give the best tissue samples. Pathologist will give a Gleason score on the samples. Those scores will be your first course indicator for treatment.

The Prostate Cancer Research Institute has some good info: [pcri.org]

"The Key to Prostate Cancer" is a very good book to start: [www.amazon.com]

Some thoughts:
Prostate cancer feeds on testosterone, you may be asked to do Androgen Deprivation Therapy. ADT lowers testosterone production and absorption, but it can thin your bones. Get a Bone Density Scan prior to starting ADT to set a baseline.

For PSA tests, pick one lab and stick to it. I found differing labs from my differing providers produced slightly different results. Also, refrain from any activity that would disturb the prostate for 72 hours before the blood draw. Commonly mentioned activities are bicycle riding and sex. The PSA test is the common measurement of treatment success, so it is good to have consistent results.

Look for a prostate cancer support group in your area. There are always a few inquisitive folks in the group researching and attending conferences. Member of the group heard about Decipher genomic testing to judge the likelyhood of cancer spread. My local group also includes partners since prostate cancer can effect relationships/family.

Take your partner or a friend to doctor visits, bring notes, record the meeting. You may be overwhelmed with info, second person's impressions and recording will clear up misremembers.

Second opinion from a urologist outside of your medical group is an OK idea if only to answer more questions and reinforce your initial treatment leanings. Or give you second thoughts.

Feel free to PM me with any questions. I came to this info after having prostate cancer treatment, so mine is a retrospective review.

Hard news to hear - harder to wait.

While you do wait, research proton therapy - I know there is a center for it in Atlanta, as a neighbor went there to go thru it. I have known several men who went through this treatment, and are still alive and well - one over 20 years.

Finally a topic I know something about. Firstly, you may not have prostate cancer. You have a pretty big gland and the PSA is not really that elevated. Yes, the MRI shows something and a biopsy is definitely the next step, but don't jump to there just quite yet. Also, you have plenty of time to get to the next step. This is not a fast changing situation. You will do fine with the biopsy. If it does turn out to be prostate cancer, it sounds like you are on the early side and that is better. Take you time to get the urologist you want and the answers you need. If you do need active treatment (radiation or surgery), you can schedule that when it makes sense and make sure you have the right support for getting better. It is scary but you will be fine.

I also know some things about this topic, though probably not as informed as Maddog. I just happened to read an article before coming here that mentioned that 1 in 8 men in North America will get prostrate cancer sometime during their life. Fortunately, it is usually very treatable and there are several options for each case. I've seen some guys try to take a "natural" route for healing, but in my opinion that never works nearly as well as those who stay on the more conventional road. Take care and stay informed.

Wave Rider covered most everything, one of his points Take your partner or a friend to doctor visits, bring notes, record the meeting. You may be overwhelmed with info, second person's impressions and recording will clear up misremembers. may be more important than it might seem.

Currently shepherding the wife through some issues and the difference between what she comes away with and what I hear is often surprising. Not to mention that having at least one close friend/relative/other to share the experience with can do a lot for how you digest things.

You seem to have caught it early enough. Good luck!

Apologies to the anonymous forum member affected by my previous sig pic. It was my personal pic of a country expressing great grief as their leader, one of the most recognized people in the world, lay on his deathbed 8 years ago, days before he died. Like a naif, I did not realize it was offensively political, I considered it an expression of deep emotion and a reminder of the mortal coil's nature; that we all, great and small, can only hope to make a difference in our short time here, no matter the personal cost.

I'll post another pic from my work in South Africa that is, hopefully, apolitical.

Hopefully not sounding too callous, but average additional life expectancy for US males at 71 is around 14 years. You gotta die of something, and treatment of prostate cancer is not innocuous - significant incontinence and impotence issues. Docs know that prostate cancer is often over-treated.

I’m not sure he didn’t make the right decision.

I'd been having annual checkups for years. A few years ago, after passing my 70th, the urologist said it wouldn't make much sense to continue with yearlies, I hadn't actually felt old until that moment.
