MRF Home DIY: What type of conduit to use on exterior brick?
Posted by: clay
Date: May 31, 2021 08:47PM
We've got some rusting conduit going to a couple subpar exterior lights. I'd like to replace the conduit and lights this summer. What's the right type of conduit to use for this sort of application?

Pics to give you an idea of what I'm working with.

If I were you I'd hit it with Evaporust then paint.

I should have also mentioned that I'd like to re-route the conduit to remove a light that's around the corner, and instead put a second light on the other side of the door that the light in this picture sits next to. So, I think I need to add some new conduit going the other direction (going right instead of left at the bend).

Does that change the equation?

Perhaps avoid using conduit. Perhaps the electrical can be run within the wall.

Past that, its really a question of whether you want PVC or metal. I don't have enough experience to weigh in.

Looks more like a decorative chase than conduit.

EMT
Ridgid if you're good with a tape/threader.
PVC if you're just trying to hide Romex.

Or another batch of decorative chase.

I don't really want to mess around trying to run it inside the wall, though I guess that could work.

PVC would probably last longer, but wouldn't look as nice, visually, in my opinion. But if it's a lot easier to work with for a small job like this, I would consider it.

Whatever you use will blend in a lot better and look nicer if you spray paint it to a medium tone that is in that brick it is going over.

Honestly, that rust color is pretty close to the color it should be painted.

That's not conduit, that is interior use only Wiremold. A homeowner did that, no electrician did. smiling smiley

EMT can be used outdoors with waterproof connectors, but rigid conduit would be preferable to be watertight and for ease of use - but you'd need a pipe threader / reamer to make perfect cuts & do it right. I hate seeing PVC outside because it never lays flat and gets wavy over time, and oxidizes & looks crappy in general.

Why not a couple of solar powered ones instead?

Yeah it’s already blended via patina. Embrace! Nothing will blend as well unless you go through the wall. Looks well protected too, even if not intended for outdoor.

Seems like you could easily swap out the light fixture for a different style if you wanted to reposition the light or whatever.

Given that you want to alter things, I'd use EMT. PVC would be easier but ugly. In either case, paint the conduit to match the brick.

Last time I did that was late 1980's, and used PVC w/ enough clamps to keep it from getting wavy. Followed Rhonda's advice, and primed and painted it w/ matte finish medium tones under the eves (left it unpainted where it goes out to the exterior, which is white). Still hanging in there over thirty years later.

What OWC Jamie said. I've never heard of WIreMold being legal for
outdoor wiring.

Lowe's carries PVC Sch.40 rigid conduit, 1/2" X 10ft is $6.

Paintable, plenty of various connectors, & EZ to work with.

My neighbor had a 240v outdoor connector for his Tesla charger installed
by an electrician and that's what they used. Painted to match wall, it's
not an eyesore.

Check local building codes as well. Redoing the conduit may require a permit and electrician(It does where I live). Replacing the light would not.

Wow - Wiremold surface mount raceway for an exterior application. Pretty impressive.

Not impressive. Inappropriate for the application, not legal by code for exterior use smiling smiley A home inspector would flag it and it'd need to be replaced when the house is sold.

This assumes the home inspector has a clue. Many aren't that good.
