Bottled Water, how is this possible?

ALDI's has 'Pur Aqua' purified drinking water 24-pack 20oz bottles for $1.49.
That's only 6.2¢ each.
Forget the cost of the bottle and water within, each case is 3.75 gallons.
The weight of just the water is almost Thirty Two pounds and last time I checked,
shipping (diesel fuel) ain't cheap!

Extreme loss leader?

"Purified" drinking water is pretty much local tap water run through a filter. It's dirt cheap.

Understood but the transportation is not "dirt cheap".

We’re entering an age where dirt will be significantly cheaper than water.

And that's in addition to the actual bottling of the water in the first place.

I'd say loss leader, maybe public service?

I don't drink bottled water, but for that price, I would.

Supply chain logistics. A semi gets pretty much the same mileage towing an empty vs full trailer. Chips don't weigh anything, neither does toilet paper. As long as your truck isn't over weight or out of space there isn't a cost to throwing water in there.

"Local" being the operative word.

Perhaps it is close to its ‘sell by’ date after which whatever leeches from the plastic gives it a bad taste.

With washed used water bottles. Hand scrubbed and steamed.

6.2 cents per bottle is still a significant markup over the municipal cost of water.

Around here it's .5 cents per gallon. ($5.35 / 1,000 gallons), or 1.25 cents when you also factor in the sewage rates.
