Oxycodone

I had two implants put in this morning, one on each side of my mouth. Acetaminophen helped with the pain, but wasn't really doing the job. so i took an oxycodon (also prescribed by the doc along with antibiotic) and the pain is receding enough for me to go to sleep, but oh yeah i feel high.
I don't remember being high a few years ago when I had some because of an auto accident. But I do remember being depressed as hell the next day. Happened twice, and I didn't take any more. So I really didn't want to take one tonight, but need sleep.
Anyone else evr get depressed after a dose of oxy?
Pro tip: Practicing salsa moves in the evening after getting implants does not help the pain go away.

Most get depressed because they can’t get a dose.

I find that Ibuprofen works for me after dental surgery.

Even one small 200mg tablet can dial back the pain quite a bit.

I used to get lower back pain from it, although maybe that was codeine syrup, now that I think about it.

I personally don't like stronger painkillers - just makes me feel off in a really unsettling way. I end up putting myself through more pain than I need to because I put off taking the meds.

It would have been good to talk to your doctor about this.

Is half a dose an option?

I go for maximum pain relief when necessary.

I probably could cut a tablet in half. but I'm expecting the pain to be more manageable tomorrow and i don't plan to take any more of the oxy. I also try to limit my use of high dose painkillers.

Constipation, take it a few days and you need dynamite to move.

I believe it was mentioned in another thread here that taking 1 Acetaminophen + 1 Ibuprofen actually has a stronger pain killing effect than Oxy?

(Obviously please verify this before taking my random advice!)

In general I don't like painkillers because I think of pain as the body's alarm system and pain killers as turning off the alarm instead of fixing the cause of the alarm. So I usually skip the pills so that I can monitor the recovery and know that if I'm doing something that still hurts, I should probably avoid doing that until it heals.

The one exception was about 40 years ago when I was hospitalized twice for a broken ankle, first to install screws and plates and then a year later to remove the hardware. First time they gave me injections of Demerol and it was a rare time when I actually slept in the hospital. A year later they gave me Tylenol with Codine and it had no effect so I asked for Demerol again, slept well again, but I can see how addictive that stuff can be.

Google: ibuprofen acetaminophen dental pain. There is at least one study that shows taking them together for dental pain is a good strategy. There are also recommendations to alternate them. Advil now has a pill with both products in it.

I guess I'm lucky. I've had LOTS of MAJOR dental work done over the decades and, have NEVER had ANY problems with anesthesia or, post procedure pain killers. I know people who simple do NOT handle these situations well. old fogey smiley

Oxycodone raises dopamine levels in the brain. There's no way to get a natural high that matches that. Oxycodone is pretty strong for dental work. I thought hydrocodone was the go to pain killer for minor surgeries. I do agree that 1 Acetaminophen + 1 Ibuprofen is better if you can handle the pain. No constipation issues.

I'm not sure you are supposed to do that. The pills are time release. Cutting them in half might send you reeeeeeeeealy high.

As with most things involving humans, it’s not straightforward. Different folks have different pain tolerances, and not all pains will respond in a similar manner using the same painkillers. Say I get a headache: if it’s located in one area of my head it may respond to aspirin; if it moves an inch over, aspirin won’t work and something else might such as Tylenol. If it moves to the back of my head then the big guns are required to calm it down. What works for me won’t necessarily work for one of my siblings. Sometimes a combination of things that don’t work individually will work together. Ask the doctor, as he probably knows of some things, especially if you tell him that the oxy’s are too much.

In all the dental work I’ve had (and I’ve had a lot), the strongest painkiller I was ever given was about 10 or so Percocet. That was when I had my wisdom teeth out. It made me tired, sleepy, spaced out, and killed my appetite. It also interfered with balance and thinking straight. I don’t remember any next-day issues, but that was almost 40 years ago. As was stated above, I prefer to monitor my progress, aware of the pain but not debilitated by it.

Half an Oxy at a time was all that I needed after surgery.

Didn't dull the pain -- pain killers don't seem to work well on me so I've learned to tolerate it -- but made me relaxed enough that I could sleep through it.

Had a dental implant done a few weeks ago. The part with the root-canal and cautery was... interesting.

Oxycontin is the time release version and should not be cut in half. That would actually deliver a strong fast dose as Johnny noted. If you have regular oxycodone you should be able to cut those in half but they are usually pretty small and they can sometimes just crumble. I still think oxycodone is powerful stuff for dental work. Get yourself some miralax or your bowels won’t move till sometime this fall.

No doubt. My mom is a prime example. After being prescribed various narcotics for spinal stenosis pain, the only one that didn’t make her loopy or have any effect other than reducing the magnitude of the pain was Hydromorphone (one of the strongest narcotics out there and usually only prescribed to terminal cancer patients). It doesn’t even have an addictive effect on my mom. And my mom should know, being that she ran one of the local major hospitals oncology infusion centers as a nurse (and thus was one of two people in that department that had keys to the narcotics locker), she is very careful with narcotics.

I’ve also has hydrocodone for dental work pain. I was on it daily for ten years for the bone pain from a congenital bone condition. Weaning off the hydrocodone after ten years was easier than getting off of a week on oxycodone after a surgery. I craved the oxy far more than the hydro.

If needed, the "deluxe" treatment is small (200mg) ibuprofen + regular acetaminophen (300/325mg) + either ~2.5mg oxy OR ~5mg hydrocodone, washed down with caffeine laden beverage like diet soda/tea/coffee. Throw in a separate helping of fiber (like Metamucil) and some Miralax as a helper, and you'll be movin' and shakin', and feelin' fine while doing so. I won't go into the whole synergistic explanation of the treatment, but that's a good baseline to start from. Depending on the type and severity level of the pain, the recipe can be tweaked for precise control; but the bottom line is, as alluded to above in the thread, that a smaller dose of some complimentary meds actually work better together than any single drug does by itself.
Good luck.

Sorry for the late reply, got back late from nephew's family grad party. Big gig, and hadn't seen lots of peeps for several years, and will probably be awhile before seeing many of 'em again.

If you are sensitive enough to notice - that is, if you are really aware of your body, almost all drugs are depressing the day after, or two days after. I have tasted most drugs once, and absolutely love them and am grateful for them, but I stay completely clean because to me, the depression that always happens is not worth the temporary wonderfulness of the drug.

Oxy, marijuana, LSD, magic mushrooms, all work because our brain has receptors for those kinds of molecules, and our body manufactures its own, but in microscopic doses. There are always tiny amounts of those sorts of molecules circulating in our bloodstream, as the inner genius of life mixes up just the proper blend of life chemicals to get us through the day.

When we take a substance, one of these magic substances such as oxy or the others, we temporarily flood our system with thousands of times our natural daily dose. This throws off our natural balance, our homeostasis, and leaves a hole in our inner chemistry.

If you stay in your body, aware of yourself, you will feel this hole and it will feel like depression. For awhile, your inner chemistry set will be working to restore its balance.

All these substances are a great blessing and at the same time their addictive power is truly dangerous. They insert themselves right into the space between our neurons.

The placebo effect is one of the most powerful, reliable mechanisms in medicine, so you can, to a certain extent, hypnotize yourself or create a meditation that amplifies the pain-killing effect of an asprin or ibuprofen. Or a glass of water.

Nobody else upchucks from codeine-based meds?

Many of my family members have had trouble tolerating the above.

Buried a close relative a couple of years ago...Hospice originally had them on something codeine-based for breakthrough pain, but that led to vomit city...had to change over to morphine.
