It's not just the South. Western Washington had a tornado in 2018 and warnings in 2020.

With tornadoes, death and destruction go hand-in-hand, smashing and rending their way eastward. Texas, Oklahoma and northward tend to generate the storms in the afternoon, and they then march eastward. Warm weather leads to warmer ground, which then feeds energy into the air and thus feeds the storms. It takes time for them to reach the east, feeding on the available energy all the way.

The worst ones are rain-wrapped, as you cannot see anything and must rely on other clues. The National Weather Service has come a long way in predicting, tracking, and disseminating timely information. Pay attention folks!

Interestingly, we have hardly heard any sirens going off in a long time. Haven't had any severe storms in my area of SE lower MI this season yet, either...
