Oh the joys of hiring
Posted by: Golfer

We've got 2 openings on our dry ice plant side and are having a terrible time filling them. With OT it's a $50k job and nobody wants it. I realize that might not be much elsewhere, but for SW Iowa that is pretty damn good. I'm just shocked, 15 years ago we could fill a position at a moments notice and now it's totally different. We don't have much for education requirements, just some common sense and willingness to learn and show up every day.

....the news says the same thing......everything is coming back but they can't find people who want positions.....there is a bus driver shortage and they are even offering incentives to get eligible candidates.....

Don't know of a business anywhere near me that is NOT looking for help.
That will change come Sept when the extra benefits expire.

I know my wife has lost nearly half her pre covid staff for this summer as they decided "to take the summer off" in their own words when she tried to call them back.

How long have you been looking?

The best take I’ve heard about this is that business owners expect employees to be available just like water comes out of the tap. I hope it doesn’t last too long but a bit of this isn’t a bad thing.

50 K is about what a RN with my level of experience can make in my state. Florida, and anywhere in the south, is horrible for nursing pay.

50K would have been great back when I was a sales recruiter making 27K - those were 1970 dollars. 1970 27K would equate to $200K today 50K would equate to $330K today.

That's an approximation of how much US tax policy over multiple administration has shifted wealth from the middle to the top.

I've never said anything like this before, and I really admire you space-time by what you post, but that is spoken by someone who I am guessing has a higher degree, lives in an affluent neighborhood (at least by my standards) and has no idea what real "working class" people in the midwest earn for a living. 50K may be peanuts on either coast, but here that is what we would call comfortable.

My wife has worked at the same factory for over 34 years, straight out of high school. It is the largest employer in our county by a factor of at least 3, and made 34k last year.

I have a friend in Alabama with a house that looks like a mansion. In ground pool, 3 car garage, and big pole barn for the RV. I think it was 225K last year when he bought it. 5 acre plot too.

OK thanks for the clarification. I retract my previous statement and I apologize for it. I guess I'll start looking for a place of living in your area for retirement. Wanna hang out for some beers?

I suspect that when I retire, we can sell the house, buy something nice and easy to keep up, and live off the rest. Just not in Seattle, or within a state of either coast.

It makes me sad though.

I had my real estate license in New England in the Mid-1980s. People would come from other places and were shocked to learn that a comparable house was three to four times as much as where they were moving from. I could cash out of my property and have a quite comfortable lifestyle.

I saw an opposite case in the late 70's, someone moving from Southern CA to North Carolina to take a job. Bought a house to live in, and a second house as a rental property in NC with the money from the CA house sale.

The kicker was "with overtime". So the base is what and just how many hours are there in a workweek?

the hours have change dramatically since I worked in the ice plant 20 some years ago. The base pay now is $43000 a year (little over $20/hr). When I worked in the ice plant 20 years ago I made damn near that with OT but I was working 7 days a week and they are not near that busy anymore. About the only OT they get now is covering shifts, when a guy takes off his has shift has to be covered 4 hours on each side by the other shifts if busy enough to be needed. I use to make 30% or so of my wages off of OT. They average about 4-5 hours a week of OT over the year.

here is the unknown kicker, if someone performs well in the dry ice plant they are latched onto in the ammonia plant side if they are willing. Yes, it is a day/swings/midnights rotating shift, with more OT than some are willing to work these days, it is really tolerable once you get used to it and I actually enjoyed the rotating after sometime ( I worked it over 20 years, I know it seems impossible, but there are benefits to rotating). $70-90k is easy to do. I realize 8-12 hours of OT/week average is not everybody's cup of tea, but those wages put you in rare air here.

Some parts of Iowa had 2% unemployment before COVID. Doesn’t surprise me a bit that workers are hard to find.

I know many that are rethinking their lives and lifestyles. If you consume less, guess what? You don’t need such a high-paying job (or dual income households).

I think the rat race has been broken for many. That’s a very good thing.

I usually work @70 hour weeks as a contractor/self employed, so 50is with guaranteed pay would be sweet if the work is steady and predictable.

I have a buddy who works 7 14s, with a week off. And 6 weeks of vacation. Can't recall his pay. It's a state job as head engineer on a Washington State ferry. Think about this. One week of vacation nets you 3 weeks off straight. And he can do this 6 times a year........

Washington State Ferries. State union job. He is head engineer for his boat every other week. Because of that route between the San Juan Islands, can't really swap out crews. Now the Captain and 1st mate are on a different deal.

Yeah, 50k is not that low, unless you're trying to make do as head of household. Even in one of the most expensive areas in the country, that's a typical starting salary for a college graduate (or even someone with a master's degree). There are plenty of PhDs working in the service industries.

The Georgia college I retired from 2 years ago is paying new PhD's in tenure track positions just over $50,000 a year (well, a 10 month year--summer is additional if classes are available). We recently did a comparison study and we're right on target with other state colleges. Universities pay substantially more than do colleges but the research/grant responsibilities are rather different.

In 2004 I started at $32k doing IT for a newspaper in Iowa with a 4 year degree and 2 years of industry experience.

$50k in Iowa for a job that has no education requirement is pretty good. You could easily live off that income even as head of household. Houses and land are cheap in Iowa, and you definitely would not be in "poverty".

$50K annual in Cali (probably <$40K take-home) would just not pay the bills unless one had a spouse who was also working.

In California, it's quite possible for an elementary school teacher (depending on the district) to have a higher annual salary than a tenured professor at CSU or UC, and that includes most every level from entry to exit… and there's no comparison at all for lecturers and part-timers. They get about $5000/class about. CalSTRS is slightly better than CalPERS when it comes to retirement benefits. Unless the person is a diehard academic, they'll be financially better off as a teacher.
