Urgent DHL text message. Am i getting scammed here?

I am expecting an International DHL Express package today.

According to DHL tracking, it was stuck in customs for a few days. This morning there was some progress and I see that the package has arrived at my local DHL hub facility less than 20 miles away. Great!

A few minutes ago I receive a poorly written text message asking me to "release the signature online right now please thanks"

It looked a bit shady. I thought to myself, maybe it's from the DHL driver. Not the sharpest pencil in the box(?). I send a text message back saying I'll be home all day to receive the package. No reply.

Now, in hindsight, it looks pretty amateurish for it to be an official DHL correspondence.

I have been really anxious to receive the package, and I can see how people will fall for a scam like this if in fact it is a phishing scam.

This. Also, Googling that number suggests that it is a scam...

Scammers suck. They somehow knew I was receiving a DHL package today and texted me on my cell phone contact number. It's a good thing their punctuation and grammar sucks as bad as the scam.

SunsOfBiatches. Got a follow-up text message from the scammers. They knew my exact DHL tracking number. Date of arrival. And my cell phone number.

I'm guessing "PROVATE" is "PRIVATE" misspelled?

If I was working from the office and no one was home, I think I might've fallen for this at a glance. Good thing I'm working from home! I should reply with something like, "Ok, I'll click on the link as soon as I'm done f****g your mother. Thank you.

***EDIT***
Coincidentally, I just received an email from the real DHL just now.

Thanks. Yeah, i just completely deleted it so nothing accidentally happens. I bet the link will be them asking me for money for duty, customs fees, taxes, etc.

Obviously, I understand that they have your cell number ... but how did they get the tracking number and date of arrival, unless you gave it to them??? (That's concerning for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is that they now have your full name and address, and if nothing else, could try to steal the package when it gets delivered...)

If you didn't give them this info, then I'd suggest changing ALL your passwords, especially for email, websites, etc., to which they might have gotten access...

Sounds like a security breach, probably on the senders end. That would be one of the few places that would have all of the information such as cell phone, tracking number and delivery date. Less likely would be a break at DHL.

I agree - the sender themselves might be a scam operation, but it seems more likely they've been breeched.

Who is the sender - what country are they located?

I received the first scam text message at 10:30am. Second scam text message with a link came in at 11:30am. The package arrived safely at my residence at 3pm in the afternoon.

The information the sender needed from me to fill out the DHL Express form was my name, address and phone number.

Apparently this DHL scam is so rampant, there is a message on the DHL site (right on the homepage) to be alert and aware. There is a DHL phishing scam alert hotline to send screenshots and links to. Fraudulent Email. Fraudulent SMS. Fraudulent Social Media Accounts Incl. Whatsapp Hacked DHL Accounts. The alert appears right on the DHL homepage.

SMS-Scam
2021-06-04 Scams are currently circulating - pretending to be from DHL.

These spam text messages either ask the recipient to click on a link, which then takes you to a website that has been hacked or you are asked to transfer a shipping fee. We strongly warn against clicking on the link and against downloading the app, as it is all part of a large scam - and please delete the SMS immediately.

Still doesn't explain how the scammer had your tracking number and date of arrival ... I agree that a data breach on the sender's end is possible, but you'd think that should be pretty unlikely for an average, random sender... of course, if the sender is outside the country, particularly in Nigeria, India, China, or Russia, anything is possible; even worse if the sender is in Brooklyn. grinning smiley Interesting that the scammer is apparently reusing the same number (Brooklyn area code), because usually they spoof different numbers: [calldetective.net]
