Pretty sure (forewarning for you arachnophobes out there) this is a spiny orb weaver?:

(The pics don't do him/her justice... he/she was actually sparkly gold in the sunlight. I had a lot of trouble getting my SX50 to keep him/her in focus while using macro mode ... the more I zoomed in, the less the square would stay in focus... is there some trick to it that I'm missing?)

Marbled orb weaver.

...Why do you always link to imgur instead of posting inline?

Because it's more work to link individual images and also change their sizes. And in this specific case, not everyone wants to see the pics right up on their screen without some sort of forewarning.

Edit: and this definitely looks more like G. cancriformis compared to A. marmoreus. Apparently it's a female, because the males are not so brightly colored and don't have six spikes as this one does...

Ah.

Spiny orb weaver. Yeah.

...I don't think people mind seeing inline animal/bug pics unless they're gross, in which case you can hide them in a "spoiler" block.

NIce. We had a couple at our old house earlier this year. One in the back yard and one right next to the driveway. We nicknamed her (him?) Spidey, and we greeted it everytime we walked by. The one in the back had a huge web, but a strong storm took it out. Spidey's web got blown a few times, but she always rebuilt it. Eventually as it got warmer, we figured she went to lay her eggs.
