todays short rant - emails with links

from companies you already have relationships with.
banks, CCs, medical chains, insurance companies and the like.

the links embedded never seem to work or work quickly.
I'm better off signing in and seeing what they are on about.
and in many cases, just tossing them.

the thin line between junk mail and spew mail.

No, but they track what email made you click, to further hone their marketing.

Always a good idea to hover over links in email to see where they're sending you. I've had some close calls with emails that looked pretty legitimate, but were trying to get me to malware. Most of those tricks won't work on Macs or non-Word users like me, but still.

I would NEVER click on an embedded link. If I was interested, I’d go DIRECTLY to the bank’s website.

embedded links from unknowns, never.
but from known knowns, as it were, I'd try as it should take me to whatever communication I'm in need of, but alas......
Mr Downtown makes a good point about marketing.

Fritz,

Some of the scammers are so good at disguising garbage email that it can be difficult to tell their crap from the real thing. I never click on a link in an email even if it is from a confirmed legitimate source. I copy the link and paste it into the browser and see what it is before actively jumping to it. That allows me to differentiate between scammers and the real thing. Even then, I often skip the copied link entirely and go to the real web site to find the info.

so far (knock silicon), none of them scammers have got by me.
even a couple that came from citibank, although I guess citi could actually be considered a scammer.
