Note app and "grayed out" features?

Hi,

I've been searching for info on Mac's note app, and why everything on the right side of the toolbar is grayed out. Can't find any useful info.

I can't figure a way to unlock the features like font styles, checklists, tables, adding images, and more.

Thanks for any help.

Type a note and select some text from it.

The style options should no longer be gray.

And for so long as you're in the body of the note, you should also have the checklist and table options enabled.

Thanks for the reply.

That doesn't work for me.

I'm using Catalina 10.15.7, if that matters.

Still grayed out.

Just found a page for iOS 13, where it's mentioned all formatting options are only available if notes are saved to iCloud. Must be the same for the Mac.

Leave it to Apple to put a ridiculous hurdle in place, so you'll eventually run out of space and have to buy more iCloud storage.

Thanks for grabbing a look here to help. Much appreciated.

I think it should work the way that Sarcany describes, even without iCloud.

Possibly it is a corrupt preference file.

To view your <user>/Library folder:

From Finder or desktop, hold down Option as you select the Go menu. Choose Library.

Open the Preferences folder.

With Notes closed, look for something like ‘com.apple.notes.plist’ and delete it.

You could try opening Notes in a new user also.

Okay...experiments completed.

1. With a new user, the grayed out features return.

2. Using option+Go, then to the library, there is no plist file for Notes.

However, under Group Containers, there is a folder for Notes. Inside that is a folder for Library, then Preferences, then a plist file. I deleted it with Notes off.

Launched Notes...no change. Features still grayed out.

I do notice that, upon launch, the features are black just for an instant, then back to gray status. So the app is reading something, somewhere.

Thanks

Have you looked for com.apple.notes.plist?

Just tested under Catalina by creating a note under an IMAP account. Yes, some features are grayed out when using notes not synced via iCloud.

Good catch!!

I also remember getting a prompt on my 'Phone, iPad, and I think my 2018 mini when new, about updating Notes for additional features, which I haven't done.

Also, though my notes reside in iCloud, I have some of the options in the toolbar grayed out, as well:

Add or remove password locks
Make a checklist
Choose a style to apply to text
People can only be added to notes in an upgraded iCloud account

Thanks guys, I appreciate the effort to verify what I'm seeing.

I'm way over on the 5 gigs in iCloud, and will have to delete files to get Notes hooked up. Not going to increase the storage.

Have a good one.

Happy Father's Day to all those who are.

So.....

I deleted everything from iCloud, giving me a clean account. That, in itself, had no effect on the graying out.

However, I did finally figure it out. Clearing the account allowed me to upload notes to iCloud.

When creating a note under iCloud, all the features are available. Unfortunately, when creating notes under Google or any other platform, those features are not available.

Why Apple would eliminate formatting options just because you're not using iCloud, is dumb. I have never dug around to see my notes wherever they were baked up. I always played with the notes exclusively in the NOTES app. I'm sure the vast majority of users do it like me. To limit our
capabilities within the app makes no sense.

Anyway, there it is.

Because it’s server-based, like using Word at outlook.com.
I think the features available with iCloud are so much better, that using any other service is unthinkable, but YMMV.
I pay for extra space, mostly because I want a camera to work with HomeKit, but online backups are a nice addition.
iCloud+ Can’t come soon enough for me.
There must be an option to use iCloud by default for notes, calendar and addresses. It would eliminate a lot of guesswork.
