"I need you to send it AS AN ATTACHMENT"
Posted by: Mr Downtown

That's what the client keeps saying over and over to me on the phone this afternoon.

He had me work up a JPEG that will be uploaded to Instagram, and I emailed the finished file to him. Now he says, "No. No. It came in the body of the email. I need it as an attachment."

Is there some hidden setting I should know about in Mail? I suggested I could ZIP it, but he says that's not gonna work for him. He needs it AS AN ATTACHMENT.

Did you click on the little paper clip and add it to the email?
It sounds like you sent it as an attachment, but he doesn’t know how to DL the attachment, to me.

his software is putting the image in the email as a service - there's nothing you can do about this. Your customer needs to have a qualified computer user on his end, cause he ain't up to it.

It is an attachment.
Have the client right-click on the image, and save.

What email client is sending it and what is receiving it. The .zip file is the best solution.

And Apple Mail can mess with jpeg attachments because it lets the sender select the "size" and can recompress them to a smaller size unless "Actual Size" is selected by the sender.

Exactly.

Then he just doesn’t know how to save the attachment, as others have said.

Yeah, I'd wonder what he's using. This used to be an actual problem with certain email clients, but I don't think it's been the case for many, many years.

Unfortunately, the error may be on your end. "Always send Windows-friendly attachments" needs to be selected in the pull-down; you'll find this under Edit-->Attachments in Mail.

Thanks; luckily, it's already checked.

I remember this in the late 90s with Windows Outlook.

Boy, this day and age-excepting people like my 95 yo Aunt-it's surprising that anybody wouldn't know how to download an attachment. Sounds like the Pointy Haired Boss straight out of Dilbert..

Some e-mail clients default to showing attachments inline, while others show them as attachments. For instance, the Apple Mail client on my Mac shows attachments inline; the Windows Outlook client on my work PC shows them as file attachments.

As others have mentioned, you have no control over how the e-mail client he uses works - and neither does he, probably. There are ways around this - I suggest choosing the one that will be the most inconvenient option available to him while still being compliant with his request.

It is what it is.

Apple Mail puts images inline when you send a message in rich/html format.

Change the type of message from rich text to plain text and the attachment will always be appended as a regular MIME attachment.

Dear Client,

Just give me temporary access to your IG account under our existing NDA. I will post the image as you wished. I will then delete the access information.

CC: yourself on the email with the file to see how the email is being received. Screenshot it and show the client.
