Problems with Mail

Hi all,

I've been using the Mail program included in the MacOS for over 10 years and now I am having a strange problem.

Receiving mail and managing folders is working fine but when I try to send a new or reply message the screen flashes multiple times between the main mail window and the new message and the message never makes it to the outbox.

Closing Mail and restarting the program shows the message in the outbox and it may or may not send at that point. Same results with rebooting the entire iMac.

Mail version 14.0
iMac Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017
(currently Big Sur 11.4)

Can I delete and reinstall Mail without loosing my archives?
How do I get at pristine copy of Mail from Apple?
Should I give up on mail and using something else?

Thanks,

John

Open the Connecton Doctor window from the Window menu in Mail.

Do you see green dots next to both the Outgoing (SMTP) and incoming (IMAP/POP) servers?

Thank you.
The email program could not connect to the outgoing server. After reentering the smtp server its working
