Linus tech often promotes Honey.

Wife was browsing in Chrome and she got some ad for a Capital One shopping extension to Chrome, supposedly gives you discount codes, etc.

I assume all of these track and EXPLOIT your browsing history, or am I wrong here? I doubt there is any free lunch.

This doesn't mean that they aren't doing data-aggregation and tracking, but per the Snopes link there's at least a very good chance that short of the company being acquired or hacked your data from Honey is not being shared with other companies.

...Capital One offers no such protections, and even if they said they did I wouldn't believe them for a moment because historically they have ruthlessly exploited their customers every way they could -- specifically targeting "subprime" borrowers -- and they've been lax with security across multiple hacks.

We already have a Cap One cc, and use it whenever we can, including all online shopping. Cap One knows our shopping habits already. I comparison shop before I buy to get the best price. I use my gmail email for all accounts to minimize the spam email. I'm not sure how much more I would give up with the Cap One extension.

With the Shopping add-on, they can track every site that you visit, text that you enter, whatever they can pick up from cookies, and they make particular note in their privacy policy that they record pretty much everything you do on social media, including those you associate with online.

And that's what they're willing to tell you they're tracking.

I've always been wary of these types of extensions, so I don't use them myself. Probably not any different than sharing your phone number at the grocery store, but opting in to share all your browsing data just doesn't seem wise.

I'm surprised as well that Capital One promotes this when logging into their bank/cc accounts. The first time I saw this, I nearly opted in because of the source but immediately asked myself why would I do this???
