Let's science up the stinky pee problem...

TL/DR: It's normal, and shows your kidneys are working properly. Now go and mark your territory so the other critters stay away !

I think this should be reposted as poll of some sort since there are differences in how people process it AND whether or not they can even smell it.

I don't recall ever noticing this effect until 10-15 years ago, but for me it's BAAAAAD! I often pass on asparagus just to avoid the aftermath. I know it's just a natural function, but sometimes it just isn't worth it.

I still remember the first time I peed after asparagus! I avoid now because of that!

I remember both having a pee smell, but I remember the Sugar Smacks as having a different sweeter smell than the asparagus.

I love grilled asparagus. Boiled or steamed, not so much.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

I love asparagus, and have never noted this particular problem.

...or perhaps I should say, never noticed anything more than the usual funk down there.

ewww...

I love grilled asparagus.

Just oven "grilled" it last night -- we add baby carrots and cauliflower, sometimes broccoli, or squash cubes.

cookie sheet, foil, olive oil, ground pepper and coarse salt. yum.

the red-purple dye also survives passing through your GI tract, at least for pickled beets.

I had a funny situation a few years back after having asparagus for dinner and then going to a major league baseball game. in the men's room, where it's a couple dozen urinals all in a row, I did my business, and then it started... ugh! I had forgotten about eating it just a couple hours before, and now I was not only grossing me out, but everyone else. I'll never do that again.

Quite correct that both the production of the offending compounds and the ability to detect them are genetically based, and furthermore that they are separate traits... meaning someone could produce and detect, produce but not detect, not produce but detect, or neither produce nor detect. grinning smiley

Yuppers, all beets. I like beets, but it still makes me do a double-take at what looks like bloody doo-doo in the toilet the day after.

Newton's post reminded me of why I could never eat any of my mother's beet borscht! Ughhh! Just the color was enough to turn me off, much less eat the stuff. NEVER EVEN TASTED IT! Ergo, I never experienced the "after effects".

I also DON'T look forward to peeing after eating asparagus! Have the same reaction to that veggie as the other posters.

I love asparagus. Had a bunch last night with my grilled T-bone. No problems.

You either aren't producing the stenchy odor or you can't smell it. Or both. Aren't you even curious?
