Man, I wish I had bought that Porsche 914 when I had a chance

I passed on a green one in the 70's because they only had one car and I wasn't sold on green.

Both Sprite Bottle green metallic and, if I recall correctly, M & M green were popular colors on those and not many people are up for that level of commitment to the color green.

This was close to John Deere green. I lusted after one in a magazine ad, but when I went to make the deal, I just couldn't do it.

My recollection is, that when they were introduced they were dismissed as being a Porsche in name only, and they were problem-plagued to boot.

Correct. The 914/4 was only Porsche badged in the US. Everywhere else it
was a Volkswagen-Porsche.

Should have bought my uncles 1969 912... offered it to my dad in 79, but he didn't want it. He was a "chevy" guy, WTH that meant.

69 911 green was nice...this one is for sale... only $110K

Back then we always referred to the 914 as "the poor man's Porsche."

I tried to buy a new 944 at age 22 or 23 and the sales guy said bring the title to your VW and I'll let you test drive one. I was single, making good money I never went back, he was an ass. That was like 1984. Went and bought a new 1984 Celebrity Eurosport for some reason. Dad was friends with the Chevy dealer because they were both Masons in the local lodge and Dad had been doing business with them for decades. His dealership treated people right. I actually bought a small house from a family member and a car that year.

Looking back I should've went with the Porsche.

Yes, but when you transplant the 914-6 and transaxle into a Bug, it REALLY becomes a Super Beetle.

The Buick guru who taught me much of what I know did that to his wife's Super Beetle droptop. Beautiful resto-mod.

the 914-6 and transaxle...
I can't even imagine how much a 914-6 drivetrain would now cost, if
you can find one that's not a boat anchor.
Technology marches on, the 914-6's 2.0L engine produced 110HP!
A stock VW (Audi) 1.8L I4 Turbo can produce almost 240HP and there's a
Mountune Racing F2 version producing 480HP (max boost).

They were a replacement for the VW Karman-Ghia and VW only put the Porsche badge on it (and only in the US) at the last minute. It was definitely a better performer than the Karman-Ghia but it certainly was no Porsche in the quality department.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

I think they look like electric cars should look.

Just missed one on Faecesbook, surprised it lasted that long. If I had a trailer, shop space, and lived on the East Coast, I would have been there within in 16 hours.
