car has 36010 miles when I dropped it of and picked it up.

I get an email from Car fax, mileage is 80k. WTF? I look at the invoice,, it says mileage in/out is 79557.

They typed in the wrong mileage, and now Carfax has the wrong info. It will be interesting to see what happens next time I do maintenance or inspection, carfare will probably report that I rolled back the mileage.

How do I deal with this incompetence?

Yes, point out this discrepancy to the dealer, especially if you had any mechanical work done as this work will have a time/mileage warranty.

as long as you have the title, with yearly (or bi-annual) inspections detailing the correct milage, you will probably be fine. But, I agree, some will question the Carfax quote if it can't be corrected.

CA used to do inspections but they were pretty random.

We do have emissions inspections based on age of the car, and milage is documented.

Because the Volt requires so little maintenance (tire rotations), the dealer has to come up with a way to get your money and maybe moving the warranty (Voltec system has 100k/8 year, longer in California) along is a way.

This might impact your auto insurance too. My insurance company started using a "service" to get annual usage based on odometer reading reports. So if CarFax is seeing this reading, it's possible that your insurance company is too and may base your rates on this high mileage increase.

I bet an easy fix to that would be to drive by one of their agent's offices for verification.

Lol. Modern day problems. Glad that you noticed and started a "paper" trail. It took me a month once to convince a HR office that I was not getting emails. I got blamed for it, of course. But when someone looked, for the umpteenth time, at the email contact addresses, someone had typed a lowercase L, and not a one (1). Doooh.
