connecting to windows computer by computer name?

My wife needs to control her work computer screen from home. IT says install your own vnc server. Okey dokey. So we can VPN into her work network just fine. We can connect to her computer using Screen Sharing or Edovia's Screens using her network ip address. I'm worried her computer ip address could change in the future though. I know her computer name on the network but have no idea how to connect using that. Advice?

If Remote Desktop support is active on her work PC, you should be able to use Remote Desktop Connection to connect using the fully qualified domain name of her PC. Will she be connecting to her work PC using a Mac or PC?

Thank you for the help. Now I'm being told they are simply going to turn off VPN connections for "security reasons". Okey dokey. But they still say we can use VNC via GoToMyPc.com . I suspect this has more to do with them not wanting to troubleshoot vpn connections than it does security. Thanks for the help.

why ask us, shouldn't she be asking IT? It's their idea - they should be able to walk her through setting up. Isn't this what an IT dept does?

Hal, while I agree it doesn’t always work that way.

Geesh. Her IT people are a few years out of date. Gotomypc exposes their network. So does BYOD VPN tunnels.

Most companies have shifted to virtual desktops where you connect to the work via a https web interface, then enter a secured virtual machine. Then log into your work network and use approved apps. Validate and secured via a two factor authentication tool like Okta (validate with her cell phone).

VPN's mask the users IP address. Banning known VPN exit addresses is a fairly standard (though low tech) way to prevent intruders from accessing the business' domain. It doesn't help much if an approved user's computer has been hacked as a relay for intruders, but it does allow identification which user/IP-address was the source of an intrusion.

I think a company uses their own VPN so the users can see their internal network from home... this is not the VPN we use to hide our identity when we go abroad or to coffee shops.
