Hi everyone,

With the summer season down here (hot and humid) come the insect bites.

Someone on my local Nextdoor posted this pic:



... what I've been getting recently ... similar to mosquito, but VERY small bites, no visible blood, where I'm not aware of any actual insect stinging me. Usually the bites are on hands or feet/ankles. Consequently, I don't often notice it until after it's happened (and gotten itchy, etc.). The bites usually resolve within a day or two, unless I really scratch them.

Any idea what could be doing this? (I've got a great recipe for homemade insect repellent, but it's a pain to have to be using this stuff all the time...)

they are tiny, tiny bites and you barely notice them at first. They act like mild mosquito bites, but after a day or two, the itching goes through the roof and you end up scratching and that makes it much worse.

I get something that sounds like your description, but it not a bite, it's an allergic reaction to Rosemary plants where they've had contact with my skin.

I had a recent bout with the exact same type of bites about a month ago. I thought it might be scabies, but it went away after a week or so and hasn’t returned, an outcome not typical of scabies.

Could be chiggers or mites, too.

Yes, I'd thought of either no-see-ums or mites.

The most recent set of bites I just got earlier today when I was outdoors at the local Lowes and looking through all the plants. I started to notice that my hands were getting itchy.

At first, I thought it might be due to the fact that-- on one of the plants, there was actually a cute little frog who decided to climb from one of the plants onto my hand. (There are frogs all over around here right now, especially because of the rains, and my local Lowes also happens to be right next to a frog-friendly ditch type area. I took the frog being on the plants as a good sign to be buying them, since frogs eat bugs.)

Then after washing my hands (of course, having a frog touching my hand), I noticed the small bites. I'm leaning towards mites rather than no-see-ums, because according to the wiki page for those (Wiki), they're 1-3 mm in size, and that actually should have been large enough for me to, well, see 'em.

Followup, this is maybe interesting. Last night, I tried using (for the first time) one of those mini-suction bite tools ("Bug Bite Thing", some people swear by it) on one of the small bites. This particular bite is on the back of my hand, in the area between thumb and forefinger. I figured, what the heck, why not give the suction tool a try. Sure enough, today, I see that the bite is now a bit reddened, maybe a tad bit more than yesterday, but not at all itchy. However, the area all around the bite looks slightly bruised, probably from the suction tool... seems my skin is a bit too sensitive for this tool. Next time I'll just try some topical hydrocortisone.

I just scraped mine off with my fingernail. They were kinda itchy before that -- afterward, the itching stopped.

They need to correct one of the bug images in the picture. The bite of the bed bug doesn't match the image of the insect. They used an image of a stink bug instead of a bed bug. Stink bugs look like shields as demonstrated in the image. Bed bugs look like ovals.
