Women’s Handball Players Are Fined for Rejecting Bikini Uniforms

"Norway’s beach handball players were each fined 150 euros for wearing shorts rather than the required bikini bottoms. A spokeswoman for the International Handball Federation"

Good for them. There's been a push to stop the sexualization of the female competitors; if they can play in shorts then what's the issue?

(BTW, it's spelled < y'all >.)

oh, @#$%& off! seriously... what is wrong with people!?

Kare Geir Lio, the head of the Norwegian Handball Federation, said the organization would pay the fine. He said Norway had repeatedly complained about the bikini bottom requirement to the international federation since 2006. “Nothing has happened,” he said.

Female athletes have spoken out against the double standards for their uniforms many times in recent decades. Women are required to wear more revealing outfits in several sports, including track and field, beach volleyball and tennis. In 2011, the Badminton World Federation decreed that women must wear skirts or dresses to play at the elite level in order to help revive flagging interest in women’s badminton.

I absolutely LOVE volleyball - any kind of volleyball and it really pisses me off that womens doubles volleyball is treated pretty much like a mud wrestling event. They are amazing athletes and deserve at the very least indifference instead of drooling old man attention they tend to get.

All the athletes should just go back to what athletes wore during the ancient Olympics.

So happy to see the pushback on this. Heck, I'd be happy to contribute to a GoFundMe for those fines. Why should female athletes spend a single nanosecond worrying about wardrobe malfunctions? 100% of their focus should be on their performance. That goes for women gymnasts, too.

Here's hoping the Men's team wears Bikini bottoms in support of the women's team.

Somewhat ironically, an English Paralympian long jumper was told she should wear shorts instead of her competition briefs.

Team GB Paralympian Olivia Breen was told by an official that her sprint uniform was "inappropriate" and "too revealing." She has worn that type of uniform throughout her nine-year career, and it is allowed under the rules.

"I just finished my last long jump competition before [Paralympic] selection," Breen told ESPN. "This official came up to me and said to me: 'Can I speak to you?' And she just said, 'I think your briefs are too revealing. I think you should consider buying some shorts.'

I, for one, will welcome the Australian Men's Beach Handball Team, AND their budgie smugglers.

There was a push by some prominent women gymnasts (and as usual I'm too lazy to look it up) to switch from a leotard to a unitard.

men. are. creepy.

my niece plays golf on her college team in So Cal -- and I follow her on IG, plus a few golfers she follows, men and women. One woman blonde, petite, natch, has had an IG account since 2014, it wasn't much. She started doing some YT golf videos too.

About 2018 she shifted her mostly golf content to mostly just glamor shots of herself -- bikinis, small skirts, exercise, some golf etc.. you get the point. IG went from a few thousand to near 100K, and every post now gets 5K likes with hundreds of pervy comments. I dunno if she played into it just to get more IG, but its like "if you cant beat em, join em".

entire YT channels devoted to "hot" women golfers -- its really just soft core pRon. "Babe" of the week, ugh. But they all seem to pose with clubs and bikinis.

The IOOC, as do most professional sport leagues, makes mucho bucks off marketing images of female athletes - they just don't compensate those athletes at the same level they do men.

It would help if they ceased the "upskirt" camera angles, although I'm not sure that's the Olympics, per se.

the IOOC has proven over decades to be corrupt and despicable.
They exist only to monetize the amateurs in whatever manner they can.

Brisbane was just announced as the 2032 host city, I'll be surprised if it happens. Interest in the Olympics has dropped while the cost of hosting has skyrocketed. Brazil lost more the $7 billion, Japan could see a loss of $15 billion. People don't see a benefit and don't want to pay for it.

I thought that they've all been professional athletes since the early 90s.

and TV rights have become more reluctant with every cycle.

you may be right, but I thought there were still amateurs.

Make it an online only event! Virtual is the future, embrace it! We don't need to get the athletes in one place, just have them put the competition on their YouTube channel.

you can't do that. You need them to run side by side, swim lane by lane, play/fight with each other.

There are few sports where that would work, perhaps weightlifting and similar, but even then there is risk of cheating about their wright and their drug tests. Unless you have them all in one place completing under the same rules, I don't see much value in virtual olympics.

For a number of sports pretty much most of the athletes are pro or semi-pro. But in the lesser known sports and those without pro leagues there still is a level of amateur competitors that at most get some sponsorship money that defrays a portion of their costs training and competing to get to the Olympics.
