MLB Cleveland Indians have announced they are changing the name to the Cleveland Guardians at the end of this season.

Guardians will be the fifth name in franchise history, joining Blues (1901), Bronchos (1902), Naps (1903-14) and Indians (1915-2021).

Seriously, so many other choices that pay homage to the city and area. Guardians sounds like a name that can be moved to a different city.

Cleveland Walleyes
Cleveland Rockers
Cleveland Buckeyes
Cleveland C'hogas
Cleveland Lake Effect

I find the Indians name far less offensive than the Braves' war cry or whatever it's called.

I wonder when the State and City of NY will be renamed.

Dropped the "IN" and replaced with "GUAR". Rest of the name stays the same.

Didn't see any logos displayed in the OP link, just a couple of talking heads. Did I miss it?

Never mind. See it in the second, Twitter video.

Eh, not the most creative. The "-ian" angle is a good point, tronnei, it helps sell it. But, whatever, in a few years we'll all be used to the name and no longer think about it.

Exactly.

Like MacBook, iPad, etc.

That said, the Guardians doesn't really sound appropriate.

I'll give few.

We'll get used to it eventually.

People had to get used to Dodgers (from Trolly Dodgers), Mets (Metropolitans). Padres.

The team with the most appropriate name has to be the Colorado Rockies.

I like that Chicago has the Bears and Cubs. I used to like St Louis having both teams named The Cardinals.

What about:
- Texas Rangers
- Minnesota Twins seems appropriate for the "Twin Cities"
- Los Angeles Angels seems appropriate for the "City of Angels"
- and Phillies from Philly of course!

Detroit has the Lions and the Tigers.

In other sports there are some good ones:
- St. Louis Blues
- New Jersey Devils
- Miami Heat
- Buffalo Bills
- Baltimore Ravens
- Dallas Cowboys

The LA Lakers were from Minnesota and should never have been allowed to move with the name.

I’m sure the owners picked a name that can be moved.

The New Orleans Jazz were plucked out of a place that had a lot of Jazz music to the wild west of Salt Lake City Utah where there was no Jazz whatsoever. Darn it all if we ever give up that name. Nice try though, New Orleans PELICANS.

Were the Utah Jazz to follow the lead of the New Orleans Pelicans, would that give us the Utah Albatrosses?

I thought I remembered reading of an old legend long ago about albatrosses somehow coming to the rescue of Salt Lake City, but it looks like it was gulls, not albatrosses:

So I guess the team would be renamed the Utah Gulls!

(I'm pretty damn sure the story I read specified albatrosses, though!)

Yes, the seagulls saved the early European folks from locusts running amok. That's why that magnificent, regal, classy beast is the state bird that hangs out at the landfills.

It would actually make sense for Utah and New Orleans to switch. The Great Salt Lake is the only breeding area for American White Pelicans.

I remember when the Jazz moved, it was a WTF moment?

Besides, the Utah Saltlicks has a certain panash to it.
