That Jet Crash...

...that you may have heard about in Truckee, CA this afternoon.

It was only 2100 feet from my house, which is too close for me. That's after another plane crashed a mere 4500 feet away in June.

The boom of the explosion was incredible and we could see the fireball from the explosion from our house. Estimates are that it was over 150 tall. From the compact size of the crash site, it looks like the jet nose dove pretty steeply into a wooded lot between two houses along the golf course. It's incredible that nobody on the ground was hit or no structures were seriously damaged. There were no survivors on the plane, reported three were aboard.

I'm feeling grateful for being alive tonight but still feeling shaky about how quickly things can change. Mrs Markintosh and I have been proud of how careful we have been about keeping our home fire safe, and being constantly ready to evacuate at any time during the summer. We're not very prepared for a jet falling out of the sky.

It might be hours before I can fall asleep tonight...

I've been waiting for one of the fire fighting jets that have been parading over me for weeks now to fall out of the sky. They seem like they're a mere couple hundred feet above me when they make their wide banking turns at what appear to be improbably low speeds.

That is scary, so sorry.

I also get nervous at times as I live directly under the flight path for the airport.

Didn't make the news here on the other side of the U.S. But glad you're ok.
20 years later, and I still flinch whenever I hear a low flying jetliner passing overhead.

Thanks for the positive vibes.

The airport has remained closed since the accident and the lack of airplane noise is amazing.

When we moved here 20+ years ago, the airport was serving maybe 50-100 flights a day, with many of those being glider pulls. There was zero jet traffic and no commercial passenger flights.

During peak season now, the airport has up to 400 flights a day, with about 1/2 of them being jets serving the ultra rich. We now have the gilder port, a commercial skydiving outfit with the loudest planes ever, a flight school and commercial passenger service.

Get off my lawn!

That's a close call for you and others in the vicinity. Glad no one on the ground was hurt or killed. Apparently the plane was on approach to the Truckee Tahoe Airport when it went down. The first thing that comes to my mind under those circumstances is they entered an aerodynamic stall and were too low to recover the aircraft.

Well, that is scary. As you noted, it does make clear that things can change in but a moment.
