Anybody installed high gain antennas on WiFi router?

For reasons, our router is up on our third floor. Sometimes the coverage on the first floor is a bitty spotty or even non-existent. It's good router; the problem is just the building...

The current antennas are about 5dbi; the new ones would be 9dbi. Anybody have any experience with this kind of modification? Did it help?

Thanks!

Why not an extender on the second floor?

It doesn't really make sense to do that anymore since there are so many more devices running at higher frequencies and bandwidth.

>For reasons

Those should probably be addressed.

To me, it sounds like you could use a newer setup, or at very least a wifi repeater.

Second access point on the 1st floor. Ethernet cable between the router and the AP if a chase is available, Powerline Ethernet or MOCA (coax) if a chase isn't available and you have to use existing wiring.

I did when it was “cool” to . Very little difference. Install an AP or Mesh.

Not since back when the world was a better place.
Better solutions now abound, many have already been mentioned.
As noted, it used to be cool, and helped a little bit, even noticeably under certain circumstances.

I wish we lived in that better world and we had to deal with WiFi issues instead of what we have to deal with now.

I replaced my Asus GT-AC5300 router with a mesh Eero Pro system, which was way easier to configure and just works better.

anonymous,

MoCa if you have coaxial and are willing to have two wireless networks in the house. Doable but can get annoying if devices insist on using the wrong network. I'd consider going with a quality mesh network system and calling it done. Pricey unless you get a deal on an older model but definitely a better solution than a dual network configuration. I can vouch for this from experience.
